Wanted to change my domain but understood this canot be done, However new domains are accepted and user can decide which one use. I have tried without success to add a domain to the blog using the options/domains entry feature. All attempts are met with “That hostname cannot be added to this blog”. Am I enitled to one free domain only under .wordpress.com subdomain?

If I understand you correctly, yes, you only get one free domain name. You can, however, have as many blogs as you like. Just go to WordPress.com and click the “register a new blog” button.

You cannot change the domain of an existing blog without purchasing the Domain Upgrade, details of which you can find here:

The “free domain” is the domain your blog has at the start, the http://yourblogname.wordpress.com. If you want to change it, you have to buy the upgrade.
