Cannot add word documents

I am trying to upload some essays I have written in word onto my pages. When I try to upload the document, the title appears in the page or post, but you cannot click on the text to download it. This has worked for me previously, but not anymore. The files are still in my media, as unattached media, but attaching them does no good either.

Dashboard > My Account > Edit Profile > paste blog URL in the (misguiding) “Website” box > click Update Profile.
