cannot change font for article

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. I am unable to change the font of an article. I compose it on my PC in the font I want it published. Then I copy and paste it online on my blog site, but the font is too small compared to the other articles I published. My system worked fine for my second article, but not for the third one I want to publish. How can I rectify this? It is discouraging and I want to give up working with WordPress.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

“It is discouraging and I want to give up working with WordPress.” … I know the feeling, I get that often … still onwards and upwards they say …

The font is determined by the theme that you’ve chose for your site. If you’d prefer a different font then it should be possible to change the font and it’s default size from a selection of free google fonts via customizer – https://en.support.wordpress.com/customize/

You could also change your theme – https://theme.wordpress.com/ which would have a different font …

As for the font size, I usually use the HTML <big>mytext</big> or <small>mytext</small> tags to make it smaller or larger …

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

Hi Don, thank you. The fact still remains that, when I copy and paste from my word processor into my blog site, the font does not conform itself to my overall theme, which I do want to change. The text, once published, has a font that is small, and not recognizable as the expected Vollkorn regular size, even though this is what compose my text with in my word processor. Also, I have no experience working with HTML.

Pasting from a Word processor can be a mess as you have found out – that is because the formatting codes (that you can’t see) are also pasted into the editor

You want to paste in as Text to get around that feature – see below how to paste in as text – I do it all the time

    Microsoft Word

Thanks @auxclass for the link … and yes, I have a similar method …

@esaie2015, as auxclass said there isn’t a reliable method to copy and paste and keep the exact same formatting in your word processing package, into your blog.

Best you can do is convert to plain text, and redo the formatting in WordPress, if you want a consistent look throughout everything you publish.

“Also, I have no experience working with HTML.”

Ditto, until I started working with it, we all have to start somewhere.

@esaie2015 – Just so you know, there’s really no correlation between the font you select in your word processing program to what is available or defined as the body text in your site’s theme. That’s like saying you’re going to match the color of your eyes to your shirt color today.

Until web fonts were introduced, you had about a choice of 5 different fonts that everyone could use and see in their web browser. Same for email. For email that’s still mostly the case.

The default fonts on Minnow, the theme you are using, are Helvetica and Open Sans. If you want to use Google’s Vollkorn font for your site’s body text, you’re in luck because that is one of the free Google fonts available here.

Here’s how to change the body text to Vollkorn for your entire site: Go to your site’s Customizer>Fonts>Base Font and open the drop down menu.

Next, scroll down to Vollkorn and select it. You can also select the size of the base font by clicking on the button just below the Base font name box.

When you like what you see on the right side of the screen, click the “Save and Publish” button at the top of the Customizer page.

This will ensure that all your body text on your site displays using Vollkorn.

As said above, don’t copy/paste formatted text from your wordprocessing program into your WPcom Editor. Type your text in plain text and then you can copy/paste it into the Editor. When you publish your post, it will appear in Vollkorn.

Let us know if you need more help with that.

Totally forgot about Google fonts, doh ! … thanks jennifer …

@esaie2015 to change your default font, you need to use Customizer, as described here – https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

    Just one more thing.

If you run into the Customizer’s message that customizing Fonts is part of the Premium Bundle, just click the link under “Exit the Preview” and the Customizer will reload without that message and you can proceed with the steps I gave above.

Thanks for the additional link to the Customizer support doc, Don. You didn’t forget the free google fonts, you referred to it in your first post.

@@esaie2015 – Just know that the screenshots in that Support doc are sorely out of date. Probably on Staff’s ever-growing “to do” list.

New one on me, I didn’t see that when I researched about 50 themes recently, thanks for the tip jennifer :)

… and ah well, no harm in saying something twice, repetition is a key to learning for some …

Or saying the same thing a bit differently gives insight to what is being explained.

    It’s all good.

Exactly :) These things work for me, so probably work for others too …
