Cannot change username
-
I am trying to change my username to “girlvsplanet”, which I use across pretty much any other site (I have the domain name girlvsplanet.com), and it won’t let me. I thought maybe I already signed up another account on here with that name, but when I go to try to recover the password, it won’t let me do that either. Can someone help?
-
Note that this username account does not exist https://en.forums.wordpress.com/profile/girlvsplanet
Did you change your username account at any point in time? if you did then the change is permanent and irreversible.
Once you change your username you will not be able to change it back and the old name will not be available for you or anyone to use. If you just want to show your name differently please only change your Display Name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/

Well, that stinks then. I might have had it at some point and changed it, I guess… that’s the only thing I can think. It sucks that even though no one is using it, you can’t use it ever again. There’s no way around that?

When we register a username account the matching blog is reserved for our future use. It cannot be obtained by anyone other than the person who has registered the matching username account. If and only if you have the matching username account then the blog is reserved for you and you will be able to log in appropriately and register it after logging in under the correct username account.
https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/?user=1The blogs is here https://girlvsplanet.wordpress.com/ and if you changed your username or if the blog was registered under a different username account then the blog URL will not be available for use under the new username account.
Have you tried to use account recovery?
-
Yeah, account recovery didn’t seem to work either. I must have changed it from “girlvsplanet” at some point, although I don’t remember doing it. Just really stinks that there is no way to recover it.

Hi Sheryl,
I’m sorry, but that username has been reserved for a user with that site name, so we wouldn’t be able to change your username.
However, you can always update your Display Name to your desire by going to Users > My Profile in your Dashboard.

That’s not exactly true, since there is no user with that site name.
I understand how it works, but it seems frustrating to users since that username is no longer in use and apparently won’t ever be again on WordPress.com.

Yes there is. I have checked our system and that site exists.

Ok, the WordPress site is there, but there’s really no content. Is there a way to tell what user it belongs to and/or the email address attached to the account? I have never found this username in use on ANY system except by me, so I have no doubt that I was the one using it, but I can’t seem to find the account that it is a part of.

If the site has a contact form of some sort you can try contacting the user, but beyond that there is not much else we can do since the user did register the site.
