Cannot create a free blog

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to learn how to build and operate a free blog hosted on the .wordpress.com domain. I have created an account but that then takes me through a multi-step process to create a site and only offers paid options (Personal, Business, Enterprise etc).

Have I set up the account incorrectly and how do I get to build a free blog.

    Thanks

    Peter

  • Hi there,

That is not an issue – what you could do is create a site with a free WordPress.com blog address. You are assigned a .wordpress.com or a .home.blog subdomain whenever you create a site with WordPress.com, so you can just use that as the domain as you build the site and determine whether or not this is the platform you want to use. When you get to step 4 of creating your site, do you should see the free site option? That is where you should see the option.

    Having same issue.

You have to choose a paid domain, then on the next page, above the large graphics for each paid option, there a “free website” option in plain text.

That won’t give you a wordpress.com URL; it will give you the first available free URL it suggested on the previous page. My URL went from city+”admin” to city+”admin”+”lawyer” with the law.blog domain.

I’m not a law blog, and I think in Texas, it’s fraud to represent yourself as an attorney when you’re not. So now I’m going to have to fix that.

Then you go to the home screen. On the left, with all the navigation tools, there should be a thin green band that says “Free Domain with Plan.” Click that and it will bring up the Upgrade window.

You’ll see three tabs on the top of the window: Plains, Domains, and Email. Click “domains” and that will bring you to a list of your domains which should only have your (probably bad) auto-generated free domain.

Click on your domain or the carrot “>” in the box with the domain and it’ll bring up your Domain Settings.

That should have a “Change Site Address” option. Click on that and you should be able to change your name to something that doesn’t, y’know, subject you to criminal prosecution. It let me have a wordpress.blog extension, but I wouldn’t expect it to do that again.

Hi staff-doublebassd, when I log in to wordpress it comes up in reader and when I select my sites followed by create it takes me to a five step screen which does not give a .wordpress.com option only one to create your own domain and asks at step four to select a paid for account (personal, business etc) so I am kinds stuck

@krismooring – sounds like you are having a similar problem to me

    Cheers

  • Hi there,

So you’re not getting an option to skip it like in the screenshot below?

Sharing a screenshot of what you see can be really useful. You can use a screen-grabbing service like https://snipboard.io/

    Hi @fstat

I have tried snipboard as below. Presumably I should choose free at the top of the list but that does not give me an option for a .wordpress.com blog site.

    Thanks for the help

    Peter

  • Peter, the demi.photo.blog is a suggested free domain but, if you don’t want that one, you can type the full address with .wordpress.com into the search box.
The site demi.wordpress.com is already taken, but you can try a variation of that name.

Thanks, I think I understand now.

    Let me hop in.

I try to help to a friend to start his blog, and he got same issue. Typing his name – krzysztofkostka.wordpress.com – is the search box not resulting with option to choose that. He got all the time weird extensions

All the time he got something like this:

    domena

    Any advice?

I just had this same problem. No free option was being offered. I’m working in Firefox, so I switched to Chrome to see if that made a difference and then there was a free option (at the bottom of the suggestions).

  • @alexxfm, on the first step of the site creation process, select the Business or Professional option and then you’ll be able to select a .wordpress.com address. The Blog option only suggests .blog subdomains.

    @weirdmaths
, this looks like a caching issue. Clearing Firefox’s cache would had had the same result.

Good. It works. Thank You @fstat for this advice.

I think it would be great, if that way will be displayed as default for new users despite the choice they made to avoid the confusion.

    Cheers.

  • Thanks @alexxfm. And do note too, the .home.blog, .art.blog, etc. subdomains are also free.
