Cannot Delete my Site

  • Unknown's avatar

I have been unable to reach this site gman4commerce.com via any of the WordPress tools and WP-Admin — when I try to just delete it to start over, I get this message “User cannot delete jetpack site via API” — can you help me somehow reset / or get this site back, or let me start over?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey there,

Happy to help you with this.

It looks like gman4commerce.com is originally hosted with GoDaddy, however, WordPress.com IP addresses are in use on the domain.

To help us with this issue, can you tell me more about what actions were taken place on the domain please? Also, additionally, was the site connected to this account via Jetpack originally?

I’m pretty confident we can unpick some of the issues faced here. :)

    Many thank in advance!

Hi – I appreciate the help as I have tried everything. I don’t know what went wrong. This site is supposed to be domain only through Godaddy and I bought the subscription to have the site on WordPress — I set it up nearly identical to my other site jamesschoch.com … GoDaddy seems to have lost awareness of this version of gman4commerce.com site hosted on WordPress — I created another site but can’t access that. Jetpack I read about but don’t know what it is — this site was created as a mirror image to how I did Jamesschoch.com so not sure about JetPack.

    Hi there!

No worries. I’ll be happy to explain all this so you have a better understanding of what’s going on.

Difference between WordPress.com, WordPress.org, and Jetpack

There are two versions of WordPress: WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

WordPress.org is open-source software that you can use on any hosting company, including on your local computer. Any WordPress site you create on other companies/servers is a self-hosted WordPress.org site.

WordPress.com, on the other hand, is a managed hosting service provider (That’s us). It refers to any WordPress site hosted specifically by us. There are some differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. If you aren’t sure about them, please check the following page that explains it: WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org.

Coming to Jetpack, it’s a plugin that brings many of the WordPress.com features to WordPress.org sites. So if you have a WordPress.org site, and you want features like stats, SEO tools, backups, and more that are available on WordPress.com sites, you would use the Jetpack plugin. You install the Jetpack plugin on a WordPress.org site and connect it to your WordPress.com account. Then the WordPress.org site shows up on your WordPress.com dashboard as a Jetpack site.

I understand that’s quite a lot, but I hope it gives you a clarification of what WordPress.com, WordPress.org, and Jetpack are and how they are different from one another.

    Why gman4commerce.com isn’t loading

Having said all that, I checked both of your domains, and neither of them was ever hosted by us at WordPress.com. Since the domain is registered with GoDaddy, I’m assuming you actually had a WordPress.org site hosted by GoDaddy. Could you contact GoDaddy support to ask them if you have hosting with them for those domains?

If it’s not with GoDaddy, then it would be a different company. The domain http://gman4commerce.com being connected via Jetpack means there was a WordPress.org site at some point, but it’s not loading because the domain is incorrectly pointing to WordPress.com IP addresses, and that’s why you see an error when visiting the domain.

How to fix this so your site load at gman4commerce.com

To fix this, you’ll want to do the following:

    1. Contact GoDaddy to confirm if the actual site with the domain http://gman4commerce.com is hosted by them.
    2. Once you have confirmation, change the IP addresses to point the domain to the correct hosting server. This has to be done on GoDaddy’s end as well since the domain is registered with them.
    3. Wait up to 72 hours for the DNS propagation.

If you are interested in migrating the entire site to WordPress.com, we will be glad to help you with that, but you’d still need to access the site first, and for that, you need help from your hosting company. So please contact GoDaddy and see if they are your host.

Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.
