Cannot disconnect old domain, ‘Please check your Primary Site’s Jetpack connection’

  I lost ownership of a domain and need to disconnect it. The wordpress site is largely unusable for me right now. It just displays the error ‘Please check your Primary Site’s Jetpack connection’.
  I attempted to follow steps at http://en.support.wordpress.com/disconnect-jetpack-sites/ but the error makes it so I cannot follow any of the steps. I can’t even get to ‘My Sites’

  I’ve disconnected that site from your WordPress.com account so you should not see it under My Sites anymore.
