cannot export all content

I keep getting the error message when I try to export all content
I reported this yesterday and now it’s still happening – or failing to happen, and I’m still getting the same idiot message.
I want to have my own backup on my computer &/or USB EVERY time I add or change something.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What is the error message ?

This being said, I wouldn’t worry about doing your own backups on wordpress.com. WP.com is very safe and being backed-up. Safer than a USB key :)

“f your blog is hosted here at WordPress.com, we handle all necessary backups. If a very large meteor were to hit all the WordPress.com servers and destroy them beyond repair, all of your data would still be safe and we could have your blog online within a couple of days (after the meteor situation died down, of course).” http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Thank you for the reply Elise and your reassurances.
The error message that I refer to as an idiot one is –

    Goshdarnit!
Something has gone wrong with our servers. It’s probably Matt’s fault.
We’ve just been notified of the problem.
Hopefully this should be fixed ASAP, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.

I read that so-called reassurance meteor message from WP also – I just wonder why they try to sell you on countless back-up plug-ins, if the system is SO safe – as they keep saying?
I find it confusing and worrisome.

WordPress.com do not sell any backup plugin : you can’t add plugins to your wordpress.com site. Those plugins are for wordpress.org users who host their site themselves. These user need to protect themselves against meteor. You don’t, wp.com does it for you.

Thank you for clearing my confusion Elise.
I wonder if you also know why I was able to export one of my two .com sites within moments (a much larger one), but on this newer one, devoted entirely to my children’s e-books, I keep getting the error message described.
Just now checked both again, and the exact same thing happens – one downloads in just seconds, and the second one continues with the error message. I don’t quite understand how this is supposed to inspire trust in my mind?

Even if these sites are perfectly safe, as you insist, I have several valid reasons for wanting my own up-to-date backup stored independently.

The worst time to choose to export any content is during prime time internet use hours in North America. Have you tried you export during a quiet time?

  • Unknown's avatar

P.S. I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance with your export. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

    Hallo timethief,
This time business proves a little tricky as I live in South Australia, and the time differences for North America range between 5 and 17 hours behind us.
As a consequence of being an insomniac, I know I’ve covered a vast time range over several days – any time of the day or night makes no difference.
And this still doesn’t explain to me why one site should be different than the other?
Thank you for your PS – I thought I was subscribed to this thread? It says I am at the top of this page.

  • Unknown's avatar

And this still doesn’t explain to me why one site should be different than the other?

We Volunteers have no idea why there is a difference. Presumably one blog could be on a very busy server and the other on a less busy one. Or perhaps one export file is larger and one is small. Staff will be able to respond to that when they reply in this thread.

    Hi cdcraftee,

I tried generating an export for you and also received the error. I’m looking into the matter for you. Please keep an eye on this thread as I will let you know as soon as it’s sorted out.

    Thank you jackiedana.
I don’t feel so alone anymore.

    Hi again,

We’ve fixed things up so you can export your content now – there was a small glitch on our end.

Let me know if it doesn’t work this time, and if not, I can send you your export file a different way.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thank you jackiedana,
    Downloaded successfully.

I am having the same problem as cdcraftee on my blog http://www.johnphotgrapher.wordpress.com and I aslo get the same message Goshdarnit!

“Something has gone wrong with our servers. It’s probably Matt’s fault.

We’ve just been notified of the problem.

Hopefully this should be fixed ASAP, so kindly reload in a minute and things should be back to normal.”

I also tried different times of the day. Can you fix the glitch which cdcraftee had for me as well please?
