Hello Halluke,
thanks, that did it, but to say… and what I have on my other (earlier) wp blogs are more features, like a “wp admin” button in my menu.I don’t believe the various plans are what’s the problem, unless wp is taking away features to the free services to push me to upgrade.
I have to say that I am not at all a fan of the new “boing-boing” look… the old system was really just fine – this new one, less so.Pass these comments on up, if you should feel like it, and THANKS!

WP Admin appears as a link in the main admin drop-down menu for me – in the top section between “View Site” and “Stats”.
You can still use the dashboard if you like and, for some things, it’s the only way to adjust certain settings.

You can permanently go back to the old system by forcing a redirect via script: https://diaryofdennis.com/2015/03/24/how-to-force-a-redirect-to-the-classic-wordpress-com-editor-interface/
Same goes for the classic stats page: https://diaryofdennis.com/2015/12/19/how-to-force-a-redirect-to-the-classic-wordpress-com-stats-screen/
I hope this helps.

The confusion seems to arise because sites that are a few years old still have the “wp-admin” link in the left hand menu. Anyone setting up a new site now (and probably since the “new” editor was introduced) don’t get that “wp-admin” link at all.
