cannot get Edin going
-
Really Edin theme does not display properly. There is no menu on the right side. There are no featured pages at the bottom of the Front Page. I’ve cleared cache and cookies, looked through every applicable Answers post. Really really really frustrating, have been feeling my way around in the dark for 5 hours…

Hi there,
Have you checked out the Edin support guide?
https://wordpress.com/themes/edin/
It will teach you how to make your site look just like the demo.
As for your questions:
There is no menu on the right side.
You can create a Custom Menu by going to Appearance > Menus in your Dashboard. Make sure you set the location after you create your menu by going to the Manage Locations tab at the top. Take a look at the link if you have any further questions.
There are no featured pages at the bottom of the Front Page.
Take a look at the Front Page Template on the Edin support guide to do this:

Let me know if you have any questions with this!

Hi Grace, and thanks for your suggestions. I had Searched the Edin theme every place I could and it never told me that that menu is a support guide for the theme. Will try further.
One other question: at the bottom of the list it says “Translation Ready” but that only brings me to the main menu of Themes. I need to make this site both in English and in German. Do you know if there are ANY themes that give alternative language options? Or: if I just make two sites, how could I link them?
(I’ve done Searches for this info also without luck.)
Thanks for your help. -Moira -
P.S.!!
Sorry, finally I found the support pages for multi-lingual blogs.
Never mind. ;-)
On the other hand, am still confused by the Front Page Template, which doesn’t seem to be working for me. Will try further and let you know.
Sorry to be so dense. -

I see you’ve clicked the bubble for wanting a static front page, but you haven’t chosen which page should be the front page yet. If you go back to the customizer (linked below), click Static Front page, and then choose “home” from the dropdown menu under “Front Page” you should have better luck.

Now the featured Pages are up on the Front Page, but:
– The tag line does not appear anywhere
– When I open those featured pages the image is very distorted, no matter what format I choose for them. In Preview mode, all the Page formats look the same.
– There’s a big green meaningless band through the middle of the Front Page (Home) which is not on the demo version and I don’t see how to clear that. Is it because I named that Page “Home” and didn’t fill it with something else? Do I need to completely re-make that Front Page on the Home page? I don’t think the theme will let me make such renovations without paying…
Thanks for your help,
Moira

The tag line does not appear anywhere
Edin is a theme that doesn’t automatically include your tagline anywhere. If you need it to be displayed, you can manually incorporate it into the text on your front page.
When I open those featured pages the image is very distorted, no matter what format I choose for them
Featured Images for pages need t be at least 1230px wide. If the originals aren’t that large, they will look distorted.
In Preview mode, all the Page formats look the same
many of the page formats in Edin require child pages. If you haven’t set those up, the page won’t render as expected.
There’s a big green meaningless band through the middle of the Front Page (Home) which is not on the demo version and I don’t see how to clear that
This issue here is you’ve added your front page image as a header (which is what you would normally do) rather than as a Featured image on the Home page.
If you remove your header, and then add that image as the Featured image on your Home page, the green section will go away.
Once you get through those, let me know if you have any more questions, I’ll be happy to answer your next round of questions!

Thanks for the exhaustive and quick response!
About the child pages – not clear to me. Does that mean I need to make up fictional child pages in order to get the original page to render? What if there’s no more to say on that subject? I understand, for example, that the Grid format needs something to put in the grid- but wouldn’t the main text and image sit there anyway?
Will putter some more with it.
Thanks -
Hmm. Maybe I missunderstood your original question.
In Preview mode, all the Page formats look the same.
Which page formats were you trying out that looked the same?
-
I tried each of my 3 featured pages in all the various formats. In Preview the formats all looked alike for each page.
That’s the About, Session Work and News/Contact pages, each one Previewed in each possible format.
It didn’t make sense to me, among other reasons, because one offered format is “full width” and all of them show the featured photo full width and distorted, never to size. (Why bother offering that if that’s the only choice anyway? Of course I could re-size it to be undistorted, but I don’t want it full width.)

- If you don’t have child pages, the grid page won’t render as expected.
- If you don’t have any widgets in the sidebar, the full width option will look the same as the alternate sidebar option.
- You are using the front page template on your home page, and it is working as expected.
Does that help clear things up a bit?
because one offered format is “full width” and all of them show the featured photo full width and distorted, never to size
Full width refers to the size of the content, not the size of the photo at the top. The way this theme is set up, all featured images for pages will be stretched to fit the space.
If you’d like to add some widgets to your sidebar, so you can get a sense of what the page would look like in that format, you can learn more about how widgets work here:

Thanks for all this.
To the full width question: when those pages are featured on the Front Page, is there then only a bite of the image taken or is it then distorted by being squashed? I can do things in Photoshop to make it the way I want for one format or the other, but very weird that it’s trying to do two different things. IMHO.
Thanks.

Not exactly. What is actually happening is the image is being displayed at full width on the actual page, and a scaled (but not squished or otherwise distorted) version is being rendered on the front page.
You can get a better idea of how it works by looking at the Edin Demo page.
