  at first I got error message, but now site is totally in a different theme and no longer formatted

  Go to Google search and type in who hosts this site and click.
  Then you will discover that your site is not hosted by wordpress.COm. It is a wordpress.ORG software install hosted by Hostgator and we do not provide support for it.
