Cannot import blog

    Hi there,

I recently made the change from wordpress.com to wordpress.org and I have lost my blog in the process. I have followed all the necessary steps to avoid this but it has somehow still happened. I have been trying to import the XML file but nothing works. Please help!

    Thanks,

    Catstello

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I have looked at other forums / topics which are similar but nothing is working!

    Hi there!

I took a look at your self-hosted site http://bycatstello.co.uk/. It appears to be full of content (post and pages with text, images, etc). Could you please tell me what is missing?

I do see that you’ve got your domain mapped to your WordPress.com site. Do you still want that connection? Or would you prefer I remove the mapping of bycatstello.co.uk from catstello.wordpress.com?

Please let me know how I can help further. Thanks much.

    Hi,

    Thanks so much for replying.

In the end I split up the XML file and imported the posts that way. However, my media library still isn’t here. The images are in the posts but not in my library which means I would have to re-upload every single featured image. Instead I have just changed my theme and hidden the featured images which is quite disappointing as it’s a feature I love! Bottom line is WordPress’ import tool needs work. I have seen many others have the same problem too.

Please don’t remove the domain mapping!

Thank you. Do you have any idea how I could get my media library back?

Also do I need to do anything with my wordpress.com log in?

    Hey there,

Please don’t remove the domain mapping!

No problem at all! I just wanted to offer :) I’ll keep my hands off!

However, my media library still isn’t here.

The media should upload as long as the images/video/sound files/etc are attached to a post or page. Non-attached media won’t move.

I’d also recommend running a complete export and repeating your import. If you are having any trouble with this full export, let me know and I can run it for you on our end, and send you a link to the file.

Also do I need to do anything with my wordpress.com log in?

Nope. It can stay dormant. Also, if you ever choose to use Jetpack on your WordPress.org site, you will need to connect it to your WordPress.com account. If you’re not yet familiar with Jetpack:

    http://jetpack.me/features/

It has a ton of features that you get automatically at WordPress.com, but would need to install one-by-one on a WordPress.org site. It’s totally free, if you want to download it.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

I have re-done the export many times but it wouldn’t let me without making the XML file smaller first which is why I had to split it. If you could send me the XML file which could be uploaded in one go that would be great. But if not, doesn’t matter.

    I can’t get Jetpack to work :(

I’m going to do the export right now, and will send you a link via email. If I were you, I’d ask your server/host if they can assist you in importing the XML file in its entirety.

Oh no! What is happening with Jetpack? Let me know if I can help with anything.

Not sure I can ask them to assist I am using a free hosting site.

I get this error message with Jetpack: Jetpack could not contact WordPress.com: register_http_request_failed. This usually means something is incorrectly configured on your web host.
Failed to connect to 192.0.82.250: Permission denied

    Not sure how to fix.

  • Hi there! I’m Ryan, a Happiness Engineer on the Jetpack team. I’d be happy to help you out with the connection issue. Can you please use Jetpack’s Debugger module to send us some more information about your site? You can follow these steps to do so:

    1. Go to the Jetpack page in your Dashboard.
    2. Click on “Help” tab in the upper right side of the page and click the link for “Jetpack Debugging Center.”
    3. Click the link that says “click here to contact Jetpack support.”
    4. Fill in the description box and your name and email address.
    5. Click the “Contact Support” button.

After we receive that info, I’ll follow up with you via email regarding the Jetpack issue.

Thanks Ryan but it was a problem with my hosting plan and I’ve fixed it all now :)
