Cannot log in without an email link ()

Hello. I suspect something fishy is going on with my account, since if I try to log in via the login form, I’m getting this error message: ‘Limit reached. You can try again in 30 minutes’
Isn’t someone else trying to repeatedly log in with my username and wrong password or something?

I wouldn’t say I have a typical device I’m logged into, because if you look into my IP address or browser user agent history, you might see various different values because I’m intentionally using a proxy and might have changed the user agent a few times.
It’s been at least three days since I’m no longer able to log in via the login form.

To clarify, you are having an issue with logging in to https://browsingwithoutanadblocker.wordpress.com/ yes?
The reason I ask is because the same login you use to leave a post in the forums here is the one that you would use to access that site. Are you able to access the site admin areas via this direct URL? https://wordpress.com/home/browsingwithoutanadblocker.wordpress.com
If you are not able to access that page, what if you try to log in here first? https://wordpress.com/log-in/
After you log in there are you able to access https://wordpress.com/home/browsingwithoutanadblocker.wordpress.com without issue?

yup, that’s the website. I’m unable to log in on any of those pages.
The full error message is:
“Limit reached. You can try again in 30 minutes. Trying again before that will only increase the time you have to wait before the ban is lifted. If you think this is in error, contact support.”
I’m using the e-mail link to log into the account and not the login form, and since it looks like the ban is not going away, that’s why I assumed something weird might be going on.

Hmm I’m a bit confused as you seem to be able to log in for the purposes of leaving a reply in this forum. To clarify the email link you are getting is allowing you to log in to this forum but not your site?
Also, if you are logged in to the forum, what happens if you try to visit https://wordpress.com/home/browsingwithoutanadblocker.wordpress.com
Are you able to proceed, or do you get the “limit reached” error message as soon as you try to navigate away from the forums and on to your site?

Also just to make sure it is not an issue with your login cookies, can you be sure to clear out your browser cache/cookies? It looks like you are using Firefox, so you can follow the instructions they recommend here: cookies, site data and cache – Mozilla Firefox
If you clear your cache/cookies does it allow you to log in to WordPress.com (on Firefox) using the email link? Thanks for the additional info!

I am able to log into the forums as well as my site, but only after I log in via the Email link feature: https://wordpress.com/log-in/link – otherwise I’m getting the same message.
I don’t think this is a client (cookies) issue, my cookies get always deleted when I close the browser.

Let’s try this: I’m going to log out all of your current sessions, as that number is higher than I’d expect it — possibly because of your proxy usage. When you see this, please do clear your cache locally, as well as any cookies related to WordPress.com. Then try the login form again.

I don’t think it’s because of the proxy either unless you have some weird algorithm that would trigger a ban if the traffic were suddenly coming from a “suspicious” source. I’ve been using various different IP addresses all the time in the past, and this is the first time something like this has happened.

Out of curiosity, what is your IP address currently? I’d like to look it up and make sure we are not blocking it for some reason, as we did see hundreds of “current sessions” logged on our end, which is unusual.
Any ideas on how long you have had the IP you are using now? Does it change every time you proxy or is it pretty stable and just changes from time to time. Thanks for the additional info!

I don’t want to dox myself here since this is a public forum, but the IP address I’m currently using ends with 114 (xxx.xxx.xxx.114) if that helps – can you find it among the last sessions?
Recently I’ve been using the current one and maybe some other one(s) for a few days in a row. I don’t keep any records unfortunately.
Do you really not see any failed login attempts or something strange like that in your logs? That would be my first hunch if you presumably have some mechanism to prevent people randomly trying out passwords and such.

Yep, that’s the problem, we were getting too many failed login attempts system-wide from that IP address, roughly one every 30 seconds.
If that’s a VPN or open proxy, it means someone else is using it for malicious reasons.
Because of that, we can’t make an exception for it.
If you must use a VPN or open proxy, I recommend using a reputable one. We recommend a few at https://wordpress.com/support/bypassing-internet-restrictions/
