Cannot login:White screen …

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! My MacBook Pro can’t function when I hit the login button to access my blog’s dashboard etc. Every other computer I have tried has no problem accessing the dashboard, the administrator settings, etc. My MacBook Pro laptop now just gets a white screen with the WordPress “W” logo. It used to work fine. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

It looks like you were already logged in to your WordPress.com account when you posted this thread. Are you trying to log in to a different blog’s dashboard? Just to confirm, can you share the address of the site you’re trying to log into?

    Thanks!

Hi. I used a different computer to post this thread. I am only having trouble on the MacBook. Blog address is http://www.theblogaboutbeautifulthings.wordpress.com. Have you heard of any solution regarding this “white screen“ problem? Also, I would prefer to communicate by private email if possible. (email visible only to moderators and staff). Could we do that? Thank you.

  • Hi there,

What browser are you using on your MacBook where you’re getting that error? Does it help if you use a different browser on that computer?

The screen you describe typically appears if something is blocking JavaScript from loading on the page. This could be disabled in your browser’s settings, or one of several browser add-ons, usually an ad blocker or privacy add-ons, can also be blocking that. So make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser, and try disabling any browser add-ons to see if that helps.

It’s Safari. The outcome of that test link was “JavaScript is enabled in your web browser. If you disable JavaScript, this text will change.“ So, the Safari browser is definitely working with JavaScript. I got the exact same result if I use Google Chrome, the browser screen still turns white.

I do not have any add-ons or plug-ins on the blog or the browser. Everything about the blog is functional on every other computer except my own, this appears to be a problem with the specific MacBook or it’s browser connecting specifically to any page beyond wordpress.com (Beyond the point where you hit the icon “login”. That’s when the screen turns white.) So I can’t work on my blog. This MacBook is just not playing well with logging in to WordPress. That seems to be my biggest clue so far. It’s something about the MacBook or browser. The Mack OS version is 10.12.6. The Safari version is 12.1.2. I bought the MacBook in 2010. The App Store no longer provides software updates and tells me the software “has no updates“. Because Apple just doesn’t bother doing software updates to older MacBooks. The MacBook and it’s Safari works perfectly fine in logging in and editing my every other site I have, YouTube, Twitter, though, so it can handle all the other complicated websites WordPress should work still on it too, correct?

  • Hi there,

To clarify you are unable to log in if you use Chrome as well as Safari? Do you happen to be using antivirus software on your computer or are on a network that is behind a firewall, such as a work or university network?

If you turn of any anti-virus software temporarily, and try to connect your Mac to a different wifi network, are you able to proceed?

    Thanks for the additional info!

Correct, I cannot login to my WP on Chrome or Safari. I am not using any of these IT features you mention. There is no alternative WFi.

  • I saw that you mentioned “Every other computer I have tried has no problem accessing the dashboard, the administrator setting” so it sounds like this issue is specific to your MacBook, which is difficult for us to troubleshoot remotely as we are not able to examine your device.

With that in mind we appreciate the time you are taking to troubleshoot as we can’t test on this end (logins work fine if we try) and we’re unsure what is different about your computer without your help, thanks! :)

Returning to the issue at hand, do you happen to have a smartphone? If you set your smartphone into “hotspot” and connect it to your Mac so it uses the cellular network, do you continue to have this login issue? Or is it only an issue when you use your regular wifi network?

Also, Can you visit this page and let us know what you see for “Operating System” and “Web Browser”?

    http://supportdetails.com/

This will give us some extra troubleshooting info about your computer. Thanks!

Hi, yes, this problem occurs when I use the laptop to access the Internet through my iPhone hotspot. It also occurred when I went out into the world and managed to find a temporary random Wi-Fi connection for the MacBook.

The link you sent gives the following support details: the operating system is described as “Mac OS X 10 (unknown version)”. The web browser is identified as Safari 12.1.2. (Please note if it is helpful, my post on October 11, 2021 at 2:35 PM when I said several details including “The Mac OS version is 10.12.6. The Safari version is 12.1.2.”)

    Your input is appreciated.

  • That version of Safari is a bit older than we can support.

Officially, we can only support the current version of a browser and one version back, so that’s Safari 15 and 14.

Are you able top update Safari, or use a different browser? https://browsehappy.com/

Hi! Success! Thank you, Macmanx! I could not find a way to download the latest version of Safari so I downloaded Firefox and had success in accessing my blog and WordPress itself post-login, no more White Screen dead end. Thank you very much for the initiative of sending me the Browse Happy link where I found the option. This is really great news to me. Now I can blog! You did real good!

And thank you for the help from each of everyone else, your proactive positive activity is not lost on me, I am impressed with the overall pro-activity from the WordPress staff, coming to aid when I needed it. If there is a supervisor I can compliment you all to, please do give me a name and email address. Seriously.

Especially Macmanx’s supervisor who suggested the ultimate resolution.

All of you stay safe and be well in all that is going on! Thanks again! Good night!

    Paul

PS – If anyone knows of a way to download the newest version of Safari, that information would be very appreciated. Or a way to update macOS Sierra 10.12.6 in general, which is where this problem came from. Apple abandoned updates for my MacBook Pro from 2010 (at least I know no way to get a new update and iTunes never has one) and now I’m stuck. But Safari would be a good place to start.

PPS – and please, all of you, as a gesture of gratitude, enjoy my blog. I am revamping it and it will get better and better. Start with issue number one. But issue number 14 is particularly “magic”, so check out that. :-)

  • I found this article on how to update an older, unsupported Macbook, to a newer version of MacOS, so you can see if that works:

    https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/install-macos-old-mac-3654960/

I feel I need to add a disclaimer that you do this at own risk, though :D. And make sure you back up your hard drive before trying anything like this.

If you’re not able to update your OS version, you won’t be able to use the latest version of Safari, though. And most likely all other browsers will also reach a point where they can no longer update sooner rather than later. So at that point WordPress.com (and in fact WordPress in general, as we support the same browsers supported by the open source software), will no longer work correctly.

I know that’s not what you want to hear, but there’s unfortunately nothing we can do about this particular issue.

(Not going to show #14 to my daughter – she’ll never let me rest until I buy us plane tickets to Aus to go see it :D )

Well, I will keep using Browser Happy in so far as it can be used to update my browsers. Thank you. And I’m glad you saw number 14, that was special stuff. Feel free to subscribe to the blog, just send me an email to the email address in the About section. Be well!
