Cannot Manage Domain Name
-
Hi all, thanks in advance for any help.
I purchased a domain name through WordPress.com, but later decided to switch to a WordPress.org site. I changed the name servers to point to my new web host (for the wordpress.org install), and the site was working fine.
At some point, the nameservers seem to have switched back to WordPress.com, but I didn’t realize it – all I knew was that users were getting forwarded back to wordpress.com instead of seeing the wordpress.org site. So at that point, I assumed maybe I needed to delete the WordPress.com account to keep it from ‘taking over.’ I deleted it, and only afterwards realized the nameservers had been switched back, which was likely causing the problem.
The problem now is that I cannot seem to find a way to manage the domain now that I deleted the wordpress.com account associated with it. How can I manage a domain purchased through WordPress.com if I no longer have the blog account that was associated with it? I would think my domain purchase would still be associated with my overall wordpress.com account, but it does not seem to be.
Without access to the domain, I can’t manage the nameservers, meaning the site is perpetually pointing to WordPress.com, though the blog there no longer exists.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Was this for the domain vicarmprod.com? You can no longer manage the domain name because you cancelled the registration and mapping of the domain with us when you also deleted the WordPress.com blog.
I’ll be happy to contact the registrar to see if we can restore vicarmprod.com to your account, but I cannot guarantee that we will be able to get the domain back. If I am successful, you can point the nameservers of the domain back to your WordPress.org site.
I will let you know once I hear back from the registrar.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the response.
Yes, this is for vicarmprod.com – all we really want to do is be able to point the domain to our new host so we can use the wordpress.org site. If the only way to do that is to re-enable the WordPress.com site, then I guess we can do that, but then it seems I would be locked in to continuing to pay for WordPress.com even though I’m not using the service.
It seems that I should have the right to manage the domain name I purchased and point it wherever I need to, so I assumed I would be able to log in somewhere and manage the domain like I can with other registrars.
Are you saying WordPress.com actually owns the domain? I’m not understanding why we potentially couldn’t get it back since we paid for it, and I assumed the domain was a separate transaction/account then the WordPress.com account – I didn’t realize they were so connected.
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. If possible to just point the domain to the new host, that’s ideal. If not, then let’s please try to restore the domain to the account so we can manage the nameservers then.
Thanks!

Hi there,
Well to make things easier, you can transfer your domain away from WordPress.com and to your new registrar so that your hosting and domain are at the same place. However, you can make that transfer after the domain has been with us for 60 days.
Once you’re ready to make that transfer you can go to the Domain Administration tool under Store > Domains, at the bottom of the page.
For more information on using the domain elsewhere, please see:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/

Currently, we are the registrars of the domain. Again, after 60 days, you can transfer the domain over to a different host.

The site and the domain are separate, but you both deleted the site and canceled the domain. When you cancel a domain, it is held by the registrar for a brief period before being released back into the public – so that is why you should always either renew or transfer your domain – never cancel it because someone else could purchase it from under you.
Just wanted to give you a heads up!
Thanks!

Thanks again for the excellent help here. I really appreciate it.
This sounds good. Eventually we’ll likely transfer the domain, but I understand we need to leave it for 60 days. Given that I unintentionally cancelled the domain, do I need to re-register it? Is that even possible since it’s being held by the registrar currently?
I tried to find Store > Domains, but was unable to find it. Can you guide me to where I can find that in my account (or is it not showing since I cancelled the domain?)?
What steps do we need to take to recover the domain from here?
Thanks again.

No need to re-register the domain. Once it is restored by the registrar, it’s ready to go. I see that the domain is now ready – the registrar has restored it to your account and you should be good to go.
Check and see if you see the domain under your account. Thanks!

Hi, thanks again for the help. Almost there.
I’m not seeing the domain under “Domains” in my account – see here for a screenshot:
http://imgur.com/jQhrumBI’m used to working in WordPress.org so I could be missing it, but let me know what I should do to locate the domain. Once I see the domain, where should I manage the nameservers?
Thanks again – really appreciate the help.

Hey there,
Thanks for the screenshot, that is helpful.
You’re looking under the wrong site. From the screenshot, you’re under testvicarmprodcom.wordpress.com and not testvicarmprodcom.wordpress.com. From where you are, click switch site and then click the other site on your account, and you should see the domain.
Let me know if you can see it. Thanks!
