Cannot Post Links

  • Unknown's avatar

I just created a new blog, and am experiencing a troublesome problem. I cannot post any links to other websites within my posts. The “Insert/edit link” icon is ghosted out, and will not allow me to utilize it. When I try to switch over to html mode and use the “link” button, it does let me add the link, but the link does not actually display once I’ve created the post.

I’ve seen several users post similar issues in the forums, but they all appear to have been closed out without anyone giving advice on how to fix the matter. I am at a loss, and would appreciate any help so I can start adding links to my posts. Thanks.

The “Insert/edit link” icon is ghosted out, and will not allow me to utilize it.

This is most likely to be a browser related issue. These are the troubleshooting steps we take whenever any issues like this arise:
clearing your browser cache and cookies > http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
using the browser with all extensions or add-ons disabled
updating the browser to the latest stable version (not a buggy BETA browser version) http://browsehappy.com/
confirming third party cookies is enabled http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=61416
    confirming JavaScript is enabled http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654
confirming Flash is updated http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ and if required installing the latest version of Flash http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
resetting your router and modem and rebooting your computer
then logging in using the secure https:// log-in see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
    trying another browser

If those do not work for you then we need to know
    (1) how you are connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com. The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers. Also note that the main dashboard isn’t designed to work with touch devices through the tablet and smartphone browsers.

    (2) exactly which browser and version of it are you using. If you don’t know click here to find out > http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

@srqlawyer: in the Visual editor, the link button is “ghosted out” when you haven’t selected anything. To create a link you type the text that will act as the link, highlight it, then click the link button and add the URL.

    @justpi
DOH … it can’t be that simple, can it?
    lol :D good morning :)

Morning (well, actually evening over here)!
It usually is that simple. Many users overlook this, and are often misled by the title field: they think that’s where you’re supposed to enter the linking text.

I overlooked what you posted but never realized the “title field” confusion existed. Have a lovely evening. Though I don’t usually drink coffee, I’m thinking I may need to make one. :)

Thank you for the help everyone! It looks like it was a combination of everything said here. I did not realize that you have to highlight text first to use the “link” button. That took care of part of the issue. However, I know html and was very confused as to why the html code was not working either. Looks like that was a browser related issue. Between the two, it looks like problem solved. Thanks again for your help.

    You’re welcome.
The HTML code was not working for the same reason: if you click the link button of the HTML editor and add the URL without having typed and highlighted some text, you get the code for a link but with no visible clickable text, so practically nothing on the actual post.
