Cannot register a domain name with wordpress after deleting it with GoDaddy

I deleted my domain name immediately after registering it with GoDaddy when I found WordPress.com charges for mapping (first time I saw that). Now even though I deleted it at GoDaddy, WordPress.com shows it as being used and GoDaddy says it could take several months for the domain to return to the pool and be open to be registered again. Can WordPress.com help me make the domain name available? I was the owner of the deleted domain name. Was their a way to map the domain for free.

I think that the $13 charge for mapping is very poor business. I have never encountered a charge for pointing domain name servers before and it seems like nothing more than wordpress.com trying to make money. I was very upset by this. The charge should have been shown up front where the $18 charge was being shown. When I saw the $18, the price seemed high, that is why I went to GoDaddy. WordPress should allow me to do that. WordPress should price the service of registration competitively and market the service and it’s benefit better, not charge a penalty fee for something that should be free.

I think the charge are quite reasonable, remember hosting is free and no bandwidth charges. So $ 13.- / year for domain mapping is a good deal, remember it is mapping not pointing and obscuring

You are at the pleasure of Godaddy for your domain name, maybe they will release it, maybe they will put it up for auction. No guarantee you will get your domain back, if you want it try asking politely at Godaddy, WordPress.COM has no control over what Godaddy does with canceled domain names.

GoDaddy has already released it. It is no longer GoDaddy who controls the domain name so your info is not accurate (though thank you for your response). I really don’t know exactly how it works but I think the policies are created by icann.org and I think all the registrations end up there.

I am not sure what the difference between mapping and pointing is (however, my suspicion is that it is the same thing). I have on more than one occasion had web host use dns servers to ‘attached’ a domain to the webhost where my files where and it was as simple as entering dns servers into box and it never cost anything extra.

If a web host is free, pointing a domain to it is free and a domain name cost $9, then I am not sure why you would think that $18 or $13 is such a great deal. However, math indicates that $18 – $9 = 9$, so $13 seems high.

So I did not have long to wait. The domain went back into the pool four days after I deleted it with GoDaddy.

I registered the domain with wordpress and was relieved to see the breakdown in the $18 was five dollars for the domain registration and $13 dollars for the mapping. So if it were possible to get a registration only, then $5 certainly is a great deal.

It seems as thought the original rep who told me five days was correct. I wonder if it really could have taken 80 days like two other reps said…

Perhaps there is something I don’t understand about mapping…so err, I take back what I said about wordpress.com’s business tactics… sorry…they are A.O.K!
