Cannot see site from some worksations

    Hi All

Do you have any idea why I cannot resolve the BAAL web site from here?

The authoritative name-servers on the domain at Zen have been set to WordPress’s.

When I use a browser locally http://www.baal.org.uk takes me to a site offering massage etc

    locally http://www.baal.org.uk internet address = 88.98.24.67

When Zen check this they get different results:

When querying 8.8.8.8 (Google’s Public DNS):
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;www.baal.org.uk. IN A
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    http://www.baal.org.uk. 14399 IN CNAME baal.org.uk.
    baal.org.uk. 299 IN A 192.0.78.24
    baal.org.uk. 299 IN A 192.0.78.25

When querying our own DNS resolution give to our customers for their Broadband connection (212.23.3.100):
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;www.baal.org.uk. IN A
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    http://www.baal.org.uk. 10044 IN CNAME baal.org.uk.
    baal.org.uk. 300 IN A 192.0.78.24
    baal.org.uk. 300 IN A 192.0.78.25

Any ideas what is going on?

  • Hi there,

The domain, https://baal.org.uk/, loads your WordPress.com site just fine for me, and if I type in https://www.baal.org.uk/ it correctly redirects to the non-www version as it’s supposed to.

Querying the A records for either the www or non-www version gives me our A records, not the other IP address that you posted above.

If it’s loading something else for you the problem is with the DNS servers you are using, or otherwise it could be a problem in your computer or router’s DNS cache, or even an issue at your ISP. We have no control over any of those settings.

    Hey @baaladmin,

Did you recently make the changes to your site? Domain and DNS sometimes take up to 24-72 hours to propagate but in most cases it takes a few hours to become active.

From my end everything looks good for both of your sites. I recommend opening up a incognito tab and visiting your site or trying clearing your browser cookie/cache.

If you still can’t see it you can also try using a vpn/proxy if you know how to use them. If not I recommend just waiting 2 hours to see if it shows up from your end.

    Hi and thanks

First no this is not a recent change so it should hsve migrated ages ago

Re “If it’s loading something else for you the problem is with the DNS servers you are using, or otherwise it could be a problem in your computer or router’s DNS cache, or even an issue at your ISP. It cannot be a conicidence that we use the same ADSL host – Zen – as hosts the domain.

Especially as what we get at the URL is the arcived version of the site on the old server not the new one

    Best

  • It cannot be a conicidence that we use the same ADSL host – Zen – as hosts the domain.

Zen does not host your domain. We do. Your host refers to whose servers your site is installed on, and your site is running on WordPress.com’s servers. That’s what pointing the name servers to us does – it moves the domain’s DNS to us, making us the host.

Zen is just your domain provider in the case of baal.org.uk. I see you have an MX record for them added to the domain’s DNS which makes them your email host, but they’re not hosting your site.

Especially as what we get at the URL is the archived version of the site on the old server not the new one.

What exactly do you mean by “archived version”? There is only one WordPress.com site in your account, baalweb.wordpress.com, and that is the site your domain is loading for me. WordPress.com does not have an option to archive sites, only to delete them, and I don’t see evidence that you’ve deleted any previous sites in the two months your account has existed with us, but more importantly, the domain baal.org.uk has never been connected to any other site in our system.

?Zen does not host your domain

You host the web site not the domain – see the name server results

    ……………………………………..

The archived version is on Zen’s severs of the old site that preceeded the curent one

  • Hosting the domain and hosting the site is the exact same thing. Zen is your domain registrar, as indicated in the Whois information you posted, i.e. you pay them for ownership of the domain and renew the domain with them each year. But we are your host, because the domain’s name servers are currently pointing to us and we control the domain’s DNS.

The domain is loading the WordPress.com site to which it is connected via the domain mapping upgrade as it is supposed to.

The archived version is on Zen’s severs of the old site that preceeded the curent one

So previously you had the domain pointed to Zen’s servers, meaning they were your host before? In that case, if the domain is still loading the old site for you, it indicates a caching issue, i.e. your browser still thinks it has to go look for the site on Zen’s servers, instead of looking for it on our servers. Clearing your browser cache should fix that, but if it doesn’t, also try flushing your computer’s and your router’s DNS cache.
