Cannot update contact email, site (and associated email) no longer accessible!

Hello,
My the domain is currently suspended – and my associated (main) email account isn’t getting any new emails! – due to my account being associated with a very old email address.
My account has been suspended because I need to respond to an ICANN email to verify the domain email address.
Wordpress.com invites me to update my email address. My first attempt to do this seems to have failed because I need to access the original email to confirm the details change – but I don’t have access to it any more (in fact, I don’t think it exists any more).
Now when I try to change contact email details in domains/domain/edit contact information, it comes back with an ‘unable to update WHOIS’ error on the screen.
This is a bit of an urgent situation, as my emails are not coming through to my domain-related email address. I tried contacting WordPress support but haven’t heard from them. And I don’t seem to have any way of reaching an actual support or customer service line.

I suppose the next question is – do I really need to upgrade to explorer in order to get help accessing my own account?
