Cannot upload image from URL

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to use the same image on 2 blog posts on 2 of my blogs.

I click add an image. It gives the rellevant pop-up window with three tabs: From computer/ from URL/ media library. I choose the “from url” tab.
No matter what I fill in there, the “Insert into post” button stay light gray and inactive, and I cannot upload an image from url.

There’s a step your missing after you paste the link
you have to click “link to image” or “Non” then “Insert into post”
    will become active.

Thanks, teck07, but it does not become active if I do that. Something else is the problem

i am having the same problem as christianrethinker. I copy the direct link from Photobucket as I’ve always done but when I paste it into the URL field on the pop-up window, it gives it a big red X and the ‘Insert into Post’ panel stays light gray. Is the problem with Photobucket, or has wordpress changed a procedure?

@vgag: I’m not sure your problem is the same, and no there’s no change of procedure (I have no problem inserting images hosted outside my blog by pasting their URL).

We cannot really tell what may be wrong in your case if you don’t give us an example URL.

(And why do you upload your images in Photobucket instead of your blog?)

I tried again and this time the URL was accepted.

A new problem had cropped up with Photobucket, though. I’d click on the direct link under the photo, and it would say ‘copied’, but it hadn’t copied. So I clicked on the image, and when the image on its own came up, I selected and copied the URL from the Image Links listed at the right of the screen. The WordPress pop-up window was happy with this, and accepted it.

Okay, an example of a pic (on one of my blogs) which I recently tried to post from url to my http://paperdollsandtoys.wordpress.com blog.

Here is a pic url I tried: http://gelowigenondersoekend.wordpress.com/files/2008/12/dreamingofpeace2a.jpg

@christianrethinker: I had no problem inserting your image. The “Insert into post” button remains gray at first, but when you click on it then the URL is processed, you get the green ok check mark, and then you click “Insert into post” again.

But this image is too wide for the theme you’re using. You must scale it down to a maximum of 480px wide. (You can do that after inserting it in the post, but you loose some color and sharpness: it’s better to scale it down in an image editing application and re-upload it.)

Thanks, I resolved the problem. It seems that while “Show pictures” was turned of in my browser “Tools” settings, pictures simply did not upload. (In “from computer”, it uploads, but shows a square with picture symbol instead of the picture. I sometimes use my Internet in “don’t show pictures” mode to save MB, since my data cap is rather low.)
When “show pictures”is on, everything works normally. I do not know why it is so, but perhaps it may help the next person with my problem. Thanks.

I seem to be having the same issue vgag above. I try to insert image from URL:

    Tales of Big Pharma Horror

but cannot get this to work. The URL is valid and I tried it in multiple browsers with multiple settings. I get the big red X and the button remains grayed out.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

@obvioustruths: You make it easier for forum volunteers if you give the URL of your blog when you ask a question.

As you found out (since the image now shows up in your post), that was the URL of a webpage, not an image.
