Cannot Upload Images/All Images Missing
-
Every media file in my media library is returning a 404 error, including new images uploaded today. This is what the gallery looks like on my dashboard:

As you can see, I am NOWHERE near the 3GB limit for my media files.
When I upload a new image, it looks like it is trying to process and then disappears. When I click on edit for any image I see this:

My images should be uploading to https://bookarchaeologist.files.wordpress.com/ but when I click on the URL I see

This includes any images uploaded in the past and newly uploaded images. Is there an issue with my files.wordpress.com url? How can I correct this? I have not changed my [blog].wordpress.com url, but I did register a new blog domain through WP. After paying for the new domain, my site is unusable because all of my images are broken and I cannot upload new images or even change my site icon/header. I’ve read every post I can find related to broken media, missing media, media returns 404 error, etc. and there is no solution that I can find. I use wordpress.com to host and manage my blog.

I’m having the exact same issue it appears. Everything was fine yesterday and all of a sudden my entire media library is broken.
-
Maybe there’s something going on with wordpress.com? Guess I picked the worst day to re-do my blog and start using it again.
If it’s a global/widespread issue they should notify people about it but I can’t find ANYTHING and I’ve seen other posts from ~1 month ago that report the same issue but got no response.

I tried this (link below,) but it did not work. This implies that there is a permissions issue, but I think that there is a database issue. I put in a ticket with WordPress and also posted in the forum, but I can’t get anyone to respond.
How To Troubleshoot Your WordPress Media Library

I tried that as well, but since I use wordpress.com to host my site and media, I’m limited in what I can modify. Or maybe there’s another admin dashboard I can’t find? Either way, I’m not sure how to proceed since even trying to re-upload images doesn’t work.

Same issue on multiple sites on my server. Some sites were updated, others were old versions. I updated everything on one of the outdated sites and disabled everything including the theme. Nothing worked. However, one of my larger image sites (old version) is working fine. Non WP sites on my server work fine.
Some images load sometimes, but break again soon after. 99%-100% of images are broken links. All the images are still uploaded on the server but they show 404 when trying to access: both thumbnails and the source link. -
Also experiencing this on completely different hosting, and was able to temporarily solve it by following one user’s recommendation from this thread:
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/missing-media-after-update-to-6-5-3/
“Deleting wp-content/uploads/.htaccess worked for me.”
I don’t know the consequences of removing this file yet, so I can’t recommend it, but temporarily removing it did solve this issue for me. -
Hey jessekernaghan – thanks for sharing that link. I use wordpress.com to host my blog – where in the control panel can I find that file to try deleting it? I don’t have any plugins installed.
-
@lafletcherlafletcher Apologies, I don’t use wordpress.com hosting myself so I am not sure if or how this file could be accessed on it.
It’s possible it’s accessible through sftp but I can’t be certain: https://developer.wordpress.com/docs/developer-tools/sftp/ -
Thanks for the suggestions anyway!
I didn’t do anything and my images reappeared. Maybe something was reset or resolved elsewhere. @calebgentryconsilium I hope your media is restored as well!

My images are back, resolved on its own. Really odd issue to have spread across different hosts. Anyone who finds out the cause, please share.
-
@lafletcher I’m glad to hear the images on the site are working again.
@calebgentryconsilium @jessekernaghan @sirlionlabs what are the sites you’re having trouble with? I looked into your accounts and I couldn’t identify any WordPress.com sites.
If the sites you were experiencing issues with are not hosted on WordPress.com, please post to the WordPress.org Troubleshooting forum https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/ or contact your hosting provider, as they might be in a good position to help you. You can read more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org here: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

An update on this. I’m still experiencing issues with this. The company I work for is having issues with broken images and my personal websites (that are hosted through WordPress) are having the exact same issue.
-
@staff-oliverv I can’t seem to get any support on this issue in that other forum. Is there no customer support with WordPress?
-
@lafletcher Your website’s Media Library is showing the Media files fine now.
Please check this on your end and let me know in case you are still facing the issue. -
I have the exact same issue here. After a week, it solved itself then the issue came back.
I’ve been in touch via help@wordpress.com for weeks. The latest exchange can be boled down to…

I have a yearly gaming world event next week. All my usual prelimanary marketing for such event is in the bin.
I’m done with WordPress if this isn’t solved fast and I don’t get compensation.

@rolistespod I noticed your domain rolistespod.com not pointing to the site you’ve here at WordPress.com. If you want go to https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/rolistespod.com and make the address rolistespod.wordpress.com the primary domain on your site, you’ll see the content you’ve here at WordPress.com. For help with the current content and the images not working, I recommend contacting the hosting provider you’re using. You’ll notice your domain pointing out four servers by going to the domain settings here and checking the DNS records.
Feel free to reach out to us at help@wordpress.com if you need help with anything else!

I am having the same issue – images loading on web/computer fine, but disappearing on mobile, has there been any update? It is interfering with sales…
-
@sjaneconsulting I checked a few websites under your account, and I can confirm that Media Library is working just fine. When you say it doesn’t work on mobile, are you checking Media Library through a browser? Or a mobile app?
If the former, please try clearing the browser cache to see if it makes a difference. If the latter, you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the app.Let us know if the issue still persists even after trying all these.
