I cannot upload photos to y WordPress. The file size is not too large, I have only used 2% of space, I have cleared y cookies, it happens on multiple devices

  • Hi there!

I had a look at your account and didn’t find any issue uploading a test image to your media library (I removed it, no worries!).
What is the extension of the file you’re trying to upload? Are you seeing any error message when trying?

My files are jpg I have also tried on my tablet with the app and pictures I took on my tablet and that doesn’t work either. Yes, I get an error message.

  • To be sure we have a better understanding of how you are trying, could you give some information around the questions below?

    1. What is the URL of the site you are trying to upload photos to?

    2. You say you have tried from your tablet, through the WordPress.com App. Have you tried from a computer web browser yet?

    3. Could you tell us more about your tablet? What kind of tablet is it and what version is the tablet and its operating system?

This should help get us started. :)

    https://wordpress.com/home/superstitioncowgirl.wordpress.com

I have mostly tried fro my laptop, which is what I would prefer to upload from since my photos are on my laptop. I access wordpress on the web. I have tried from Google Chrome and Internet explorer. I tried the app on my tablet ust to see, that didn’t work either.

    Thank you!!

  • Hi Amy,

    How large are those images?

Also, try uploading those files using a different internet connection to make sure that your internet provider isn’t throttling your uploads.

My images range from 6 to 10 MB

I tried once from a hotel on a work trip and I still had no luck. Mostly I use my home internet provider, I really don’t have access to another provider.

    Thanks!

  • Amy –

I’d suggest trying to upload 1 image at a time, using the image optimization guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/

Do this during an off-time, when most folks are not online. We are seeing a lot of problems with folks experiencing throttled and slow connection because the bandwidth is full (everyone is home and online). I’d suggest trying the next upload very early in the morning 6am or late at night 11pm and see if you have any better luck. If not, run a speed test and make sure you are getting a proper speed: https://speedtest.net/

So far the optimization through Gimp seems to be working! Thank you!

  • Keep in mind GIMP is just one option here.

Put differently, the software doesn’t matter. The size of your images do. 6-10 MB is gigantic for the web – no computer screen exists that will display an image that big at full size, so by uploading images that big you’re just wasting storage space and internet bandwidth.

Resize your images to no more than 2000px wide, using any image editing software you have available, and you’ll both have fewer issues uploading them, and your media storage will last much longer before you need to upgrade for extra space.

I additionally use an app called JPEGMini (available for Windows and Mac), to further strip down the file size of my images after I’ve resized them, to make sure the image file is as small as possible while still being high quality when I upload it to my blog. I have over 600 photos on my site and haven’t even used 100mb of storage yet, just to give you an idea of the impact this can have :)
