Cannot use password to login
-
When I need to login to my account, the system insists on sending a link via email, instead of prompting for my password.
This is a problem because I read email on my phone and want to login on my desktop! What is the point of the password?
Note that this is not the “two step” authentication, there doesn’t seem to be a setting so wordpress.com will just ask for the password.
Thanks.

Hi there,
Apologies, but we can’t help with your issue directly because we don’t host your site on our WordPress.com managed hosting.
To explain, we are a fully managed hosting provider and use a custom server environment that is optimized for WordPress, provides built-in security and performance improvements, as well as in-house support for your site questions. You can learn more about the performance and security benefits of our managed hosting here: https://wordpress.com/hosting/
Because of the way we’ve optimized our service, we also use a customized version of WordPress that is different (under the hood) from what you use at your current provider. As a result, we do not have access to your site and are not familiar with the source of your issue.
You definitely have the option to move your site to us so we can provide in-house help, and we offer a migration plugin that will help you move your site to our managed hosting in just a few clicks.
https://wordpress.com/support/import-using-move-to-wordpress-com/
Unfortunately though, as it stands now, we are not able to help since it is hosted elsewhere. The good news is that help is available here at the open-source WordPress forums: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting
The folks in that forum are more familiar with these kinds of issues and are in the best position to help.
Thanks!

This has NOTHING to do with my site but with login into WordPress.com, YOUR site! I have a WordPress.com account and cannot login to it using my password, only by accepting a link email which, as I said, goes to my phone and not my desktop.
So, how does one log into WordPress.com using my password and not a link email? Is it even possible?
-
Hi @drrxbracho, so this isn’t for wholeness.rxbtech.com/wp-admin ? If you’ll use that link you should be able to log in with your username and password.
I assume it’s not for you drrxbracho account either, since you are logged into our services with that account. So if you need more help, can you let us know the username you are trying to log into here, and the site with connected services?
-
Thank you for replying. Yes, it is for the drrxbracho account that I am currently using, to write this reply, on my phone. I can login from my phone because this is where I read email. My problem is that to login as drrxbracho, your system sends an email with a link to login and therefore I cannot login anywhere else but where I get email, which is my phone. And I need to login from my desktop.
So, I know the username (drrxbracho) and the password, yet I cannot login on my PC, only on the phone.
Thanks in advance,
Rafael

Hi again,
Thanks for clarifying the situation. If you have used a login link to get into your account at any point in the past, this can get stored as a preference under your account so that you see that option every time. I did not realize that leads to a different experience when using the app, but it is definitely possible to get this sorted out.
To do that visit the WordPress.com login screen and use the Lost your password option. If you reset your password using this option, going forward when you log in you can do so with your username and password, and you will not receive a login link.
The downside here is that you will need to set a new password to store this new login preference, but once you do that you can change your password again to anything you wish, and it will not somehow trip the login link option.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

@staff-totoro No, it doesn’t help because the password change also comes via email. Plus, it seems silly having to change the password in order to login on my desktop. But, as I mentioned, it doesn’t solve my problem.
What I need is the ability to turn off the “login via email link” and instead turn on the “login by typing password”.

-
@drrxbracho are you able to access email on any device? I checked around and @staff-totoro is correct: the trick to deactivating that feature is to reset the password.
-
Yes, I get email here, on my phone. I just re-read what @staff-totoro sent and I realize he doesn’t say that I will have to do the reset password every time. My bad, it was my turn to misread something.
i will try that now.

@staff-totoro @supernovia thank you very much, resetting the password indeed worked. I was able to put it back afterwards and logged in to write this reply, using my password!
I’m closing the ticket now, thanks to both.
Rafael
