can't access back end
-
Hi All,
My wordpress website (www.vvvineyard.com.au/new) has been working properly as I have been building it and I am just about at the point where i want to move it to the main domain http://www.vvvineyard.com.au (e.g. no /new at end).
I am unsure of how to do this so I had a little fiddle with the main settings and changed the URLS in the setting pages of wordpress to http://www.vvvineyard.com.au rather than http://www.vvvineyard.com.au/new assuming that it would either work….or tell me it wouldn’t and I could change it back.
BUT now I can not login into my back end.
When I got to the admin login page, http://www.vvvineyard.com.au/new/wp-admin, I get a 404 error page. If I search the website http://www.vvvineyard.com.au/new I get a ‘low-fi’ version and all links go to my old original site http://www.vvvineyard.com.au
How can I fix this. I feel like a complete idiot :(
Cheers, Pok

Hi Pok,
It sounds like your site is a self-hosted WordPress site using the software from WordPress.org.
You’ll have better luck asking your question in the WordPress.org forums, this forum is for WordPress.com users.
You can learn about the differences here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Tip: You can change your URLs back to the previous ones directly in the database. Check out these steps: https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL#Changing_the_URL_directly_in_the_database
If you have any follow up questions post them in this forum.

There are a bunch of steps involved in moving a WordPress site.
First, your entire site most likely is living in a folder in your hosting account called “new”. The folder “new” is in your root directory. What you want, is to move your entire site to the root directory.
So, using an FTP client, such as FileZilla (or perhaps simply by logging into your hosting account) you need to move ALL your site files to the root directory.
Your new admin page will be vvvinyard.com.au/wp-admin. The /new will be gone.
You’ll also need to go into your database and change some of the tables in there. There are like 3 or 4. Just scroll through and look for anything that has your URL in it. You’ll need to change anything that says vvvinyard.com.au/new to vvvinyard.com.au.
For help logging into your database, you’ll want to contact your hosting company support, or perhaps someone in the WordPress.ORG forum can help you (hint: your database username/password can be found in your wp-config.php file)

it’s also possible that you have a folder called “vvvinyard.com.au” or something similar in your root, and inside THAT folder is your “new” folder.
regardless, what you want to do is move all your website files out of the “new” folder, and into whatever folder the “new” folder is in.

Hi James,
Understood. :) I have answered questions here for over 9 years and about 30% are posted by those who ought to be posting to WordPress.ORG support. When we answer their questions they return. They also bring other wordpress.org bloggers with them who notice they got support here and the whole situation becomes chaotic. -
