Can't access dashboard – page not found (changed table prefix)
-
Hi folks.
I mistakenly posted this on WordPress.org two weeks ago… I’d really appreciate some help, I’m fairly desperate at this point. Especially since my hosting company says they can’t help after multiple emails, phone calls and lost time.
I’m using WordPress 3.7.1 via hosting on Melbourne IT. My website has been up and running for about two months now.
Early March I changed my table prefix using the plugin “better-wp-security” and was accessing and editing the website with no problems. I have now been overseas for two weeks and on my return can’t access my dashboard either via the hosting platform or by logging in directly to WordPress.
When I try to access my dashboard the theme for my website comes up but the page is blank and the tab header says ‘page not found’. I’ve tried wp-admin and my new table name.
I have checked my tables through phpMyAdmin and the prefixes are all correct. I have uninstalled and reinstalled WordPress via my host and still can’t access dashboard. I have deactivated my plugins through phpMyAdmin and I have tried changing my theme to ‘twentyten’. Nothing works.
I have restored a copy of my site http://www.alifeofcontradictions.com from a backup but the home page now shows the default message from my hosting provider – the other pages, such as /latest-news work fine.
I can login to WordPress and view my blog and all my stats but when I try to access my dashboard it doesn’t work (it is pointing to the old wp-admin but putting the new table name in doesn’t work)
I can’t figure it out and none of the blogs that I can find about troubleshooting access to the dashboard seem to address this specific problem.
Help, please?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We provide support only for blogs being hosted WordPress.COM and not for WordPress.ORG software installs. You are posting to the wrong support forum. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and different http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Hello timetheif
Thank you for your response.
I have seen this response before. As I state at the beginning of this post. I have already posteded this to wordpress.org (where I have had no response by the way).
However, I would like to point out that my account for my blog is in fact with wordpress.COM NOT .ORG. I would post a screenshot as evidence but I can’t see how I can do that.
Please can I get some help with my issue. I have a lot to update on my website and it is infuriating that I can get no support from my hosting provider or WordPress!!!

As TT has explained, we cannot help with that blog as it is not using the same version of the software as we support here. It doesn’t matter if your login here happens to be the same as the one on that blog; it is not a WordPress.com blog, it doesn’t work like a WordPress.com blog, that problem does not occur on WordPress.com blogs, and at WordPress.com you cannot even access the code you changed.
Whether or not WordPress.org is responding to your request for help, that is the only place that can help you other than your web host or an independent paid consultant.

Thank you for that information timetheif.
My website is hosted by Melbourne IT. The link in your post states the registrar is Mebourne IT. I have never heard of Verio although I see they are a USA provider. The name server addresses you have given are correct, I am looking at them right now on my Melbourne IT account.
If raincoaster is correct, how do I access my blog from WordPress.org to see if I can get access? I have no login to a blog there (apart from the forum and this is my post there). I may be a little confused?
All I need is to find out what the problem is. I can access my site via myphpadmin through Melbourne IT and I can see the WordPress tables but I’m not happy about editing in that environment. I really need to be able to access my dashboard either through my hosting provider or WordPress.

Reading your post again, timetheif, if you are suggesting I contact Melbourne IT – I have already done that as I stated in my first post. They claim they cannot help. It is a WordPress access issue.
You see my dilemma and frustration?!

You do not access your blog from WordPress.org. All WP.org does is provide the software and answer support questions in the forum.

Thanks for the clarification, raincoaster. Is there any other way, other than the forum, that I can get support from wordpress.org? I have posted there and have no response.
This has been going on for weeks now and I really need to find out what the problem is so I can edit my website. My hosting provider has given up on the issue (which I am obviously not happy about but am still pursuing) and I can’t afford an IT consultant. I am just starting out with all of this. I’m afraid there may be no other way to get help as this is freeware :(

You can BUY paid support from an independent consultant. Expect to pay $65 an hour and up for that. Or you can google. Or you can search the WP.org forums to find out if the question has been asked and answered before. The lack of support there is exactly why there are so many professional consultants in the field.
Your host is not stepping up. They really should at least point you to some helpful links.

*Sigh*. Thanks very much for your suggestions and help, raincoaster. I know how expensive IT support is, which is why I said I can’t afford it.
I will keep trying. I am ‘playing’ with my tables in myphpadmin and have found a previous post based on the bwps (better-wp-security plugin table) that seems to be going in the right direction.
I know my hosting provider is passing the buck, which is why I’m still pursuing them.
Just so very frustrating. But thanks again for your help.
