Can't access my site after upgrade!

  • Unknown's avatar

Got an email today from WordPress stating that my site had been upgraded. Now when I try to log in to make changes, I get the error message:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 41943040 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 30720 bytes) in /data/17/0/75/57/75546/user/76829/htdocs/wp-admin/includes/menu.php on line 174

It sounds like you are using WordPress software but it is hosted somewhere other than WordPress.com. Because of that, the best place to ask for help will be at http://wordpress.org/support/

I did search for the error on Google and found a very similar report with a solution you may want to try out first:

Thank you. I did already find that solution you found on Google about the php.ini file and did implement it when this first happened a couple of weeks ago. It fixed the problem, but then when WordPress updated again the other day, the problem came back. With the help of support and Network Solutions, who host the site, I went back in to the php file and increased the size limit once again, but it didn’t help this time around. They say everything is working on their end, so it must be a WordPress issue.
I’ve tried repeatedly to get through to wordpress.org/support the last couple of days and just kept getting an error message “server not found” or a Dlink page. Same if I click the links in the email sent by WordPress confirming the upgrade they made, so I’m thinking something is going on wordpress.: (

http://wordpress.org/support/ is working fine for me. If you are having trouble even just accessing or posting on that site, you could have some local network issues and you may want to try checking your site from a different location.

Clearing your browser cache might help too:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

And perhaps check to see if you have installed any browser extensions that could be blocking you from seeing some sites.

Since you mentioned seeing “an error message “server not found” or a Dlink page”, that sounds like it might be related to a router? Another basic troubleshooting step could be to try re-booting the router if you think your internet connect could be the source of the trouble.

If you find that it is a network issue, your ISP should be able to help you with something like that.

WordPress has re-sent me the email about the upgrade and now the links work. I had also tried typing the URL in manually yesterday, and that didn’t work then, either, but now the WordPress support is working fine.

However, I still have the same problem with getting into the back end of my site. I’m able to get onto my website– that’s no problem. But I just can’t get into the back end where changes are made. I just get that error message when trying to log in.

    @montazbriant
What is the URL of this site please?
Once you post it I will be able to tell you exactly who you pay to host it and exactly where to get help with it.

It’s http://www.babysignlanguage.net I know who hosts it– it’s Network Solutions. They have tried to help me, but the usual fix for this– modifying the php file to increase the allowable size– hasn’t worked. I’ve actually now resorted to paying for their escalated support. We will see if they can figure it out and I’ll come back here and post the solution if they find one.

Thanks. Please be aware that we provide support only for blogs hosted by WordPress.COM and not any others.

We will see if they can figure it out and I’ll come back here and post the solution if they find one.

Please do not do that. Share the solution on the correct support forums at WordPress.ORG please because it has no relevance here to WordPress.COM bloggers and posting it will only cause blogger confusion.

The bottom line is is: Your site is not hosted by wordpress.COM and you are posting to the wrong support forum.

WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there, and get help from blogger who use the same software you use.
