Can’t access site on WordPress
-
Yesterday I was working with domain.com to resolve some issues with my site at datadaptive.org. I was advised to create a subdomain (www.) in order to change my landing page from datadaptive.org to http://www.datadaptive.org, Then, I changed the WordPress URL from datadaptive.org to http://www.datadaptive.org. Since then I have not been able to login to the site on WordPress.com. Please advise.
Self-declared URL: http://www.datadaptive.org

Good morning. I still cannot access datadaptive.org or http://www.datadaptive.org. I just finished chatting with domain.com to return pointing datadaptive.org to its original subdirectory (/wp_site_1673458204). Still, when I click on the <Manage Site> button at domain.com’s WordPress link for datadaptive.org, I continue to get this error message:
Hmmm… can’t reach this page.
Check if there is a typo in http://www.datadaptive.org.
If spelling is correct, try running Windows Network Diagnostics.
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAINTo me it appears that WordPress is continuing to look for the site at http://www.dadadaptive.org instead of datadaptive.org.
Therefore, I cannot login to my WordPress.com account to manage my site at datadaptive.org/wp_site_1673458204.
Since I cannot login, can you please change the URL and WordPress website back to datadaptive.org?
Respectfully submitted,
Jonathan Carter

Hi there,
Apologies, but we can’t help with your issue directly because we don’t host your site on our WordPress.com managed hosting.
To explain, we are a fully managed hosting provider and use a custom server environment that is optimized for WordPress, provides built-in security and performance improvements, as well as in-house support for your site questions.
Because of the way we’ve optimized our service, we also use a customized version of WordPress that is different (under the hood) from what you use at your current provider. As a result, we do not have access to your site and are not familiar with the source of your issue.
You definitely have the option to move your site to us so we can provide in-house help, using our migration plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wpcom-migration/ and the site would need to be on the business plan.
As it stands now, we cannot help since it is hosted elsewhere. The good news is that help is available here at the open-source WordPress forums: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting
The folks in that forum are more familiar with these kinds of issues and are in the best position to help. Thanks!

Thank you for your reply. Again, this issue has nothing to do with the host provider, domain.com. Again, I cannot log into my site on WordPress.com. It is entirely a WordPress.com issue. And unfortunately, there is no one to call or chat with to resolve the issue in real-time.
I simply need someone at WordPress.com to go into the site and change the WordPress URL and the site URL back to datadaptive.org. Per domain.com guidance, both the WordPress URL and site URL were recently changed to http://www.datadaptive.org and now I cannot access the site on WordPress.com. You can see this by visiting datadaptive.org vs. http://www.datadaptive.org.
I have been unable to get into the site for three days now.
Can you please do this quick site edit for me?
Respectfully,
Jon -
Hey Jon, I’m just another regular user lurking the forum so take what I’m saying here with a grain of salt. If I’m understanding your issue correctly, the problem here isn’t actually influenced by wordpress.com.
Think of it a bit like you bought a new car, and that car brand is ‘wordpress’. Now, imagine domain.com (your server host) is a parking garage. Your car (‘wordpress’) is locked up in the parking garage. You call up the dealership (wordpress.com) and say ‘hey, my car door lock isn’t working, I need you to fix it’. And they are telling you they can’t fix it, because it’s locked up in domain.com’s parking garage. They have no access to the car. That’s what’s happening here.
I don’t have any experience with domain.com, but from what I can gather from a quick glimpse, I -think- the following steps can help resolve your issue:
– Login to domain.com’s “hosting summary” (their help articles I found list this as ‘https://www.domain.com/controlpanel/foundation/’)
– Click on ‘File Manager’ on the left hand panel
– Click the ‘root’ folder to open it up if it isn’t open (should have a little > beside the folder icon if not open, or a v arrow with folders below it if it is open)
– Click the ‘public_html’ folder to open it up
– There should be a file here named ‘wp_config.php’. I recommend right clicking on this file and selecting ‘download’ before moving forward, so that you have a back up of it before editing (just incase!)
– Right click ‘wp_config.php’ file (the one in the File Manager menu you’re on, not the file you just downloaded) and select ‘Edit’
– This should open up the file contents (possibly in a new window/tab). In this file, there should be some lines that look like this:
define(‘WP_HOME’,’http://www.dadadaptive.org’);
define(‘WP_SITEURL’,’http://www.dadadaptive.org’);Without touching anything else, remove the ‘www.’ from those two lines. The two lines should look -exactly- like this once complete (note: the ” ); punctuations are all important and need to be there or it won’t work!) :
define(‘WP_HOME’,’http://dadadaptive.org’);
define(‘WP_SITEURL’,’http://dadadaptive.org’);
Now, hit the ‘Save Changes’ button for the file. You can close out of it. If you’ve done everything correctly, it should fix the issue you’re having. If it doesn’t or this seems too complicated, you need to contact domain.com as no one but them have access to their ‘parking garage’, so to speak.
Hope this helps!! Good luck -
Very helpful. I was finally able to get into my file manager at domain.com and make the edits to wp_config.php. All set for now. Thank you!

Glad to hear!! Happy I could help! (Also I’m so sorry, I just realized I typo’d your URL in my original post as ‘dada’ instead of ‘data’, haha…)
As an apology/tidbit unrelated to WordPress, in regards to the www. vs no http://www., I recommend creating a CNAME record in your website’s DNS area — unless your host already changed that for you or advised otherwise. That should make it so every time someone types in ‘http://www.datadpative.org’ it automatically directs them to ‘http://datadaptive.org’. If you aren’t familiar with that process, https://www.domain.com/help/article/dns-management-how-to-update-cname-aliases
covers it. Except where in their help thing they write ‘coolsite.mydomain.com’, you’d write just ‘datadaptive.org’. (Might take a day or two to actually work/update, though)
