Can't Access Stats Page or Classic Editor

  • Unknown's avatar

    What is going on suddenly?

    I went to check my stats today and got told that the stats page (which showed the graph for the last 30 days) no longer exists and I can no longer add a post with the Classic Editor.

    What is going on?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

    Is it possible you were looking at one of your other WordPress.com sites without realizing? I see you have a full graph of stats for edwardbrain.ca when I look here: https://wordpress.com/stats/day/edwardbrain.ca

    I can no longer add a post with the Classic Editor

    We are in the process of retiring the classic editor, but for the time being it can be accessed by going to your user account settings page here: https://wordpress.com/me/account

    Once you are there look for the setting “Show advanced dashboard pages” and turn it on. This will replace your standard dashboard pages with more advanced wp-admin equivalents when possible. For example this will show you the wp-admin version of the All Posts page, and you will find the classic editor option on that page when you visit. Note that you are not able to visit wp-admin pages unless you turn on the “Show advanced dashboard pages” option in your account preferences.

    Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

    @edwardbrain1,

    I went to check my stats today and got told that the stats page (which showed the graph for the last 30 days) no longer exists

    It’s true that the WP-Admin stats page no longer exists. Unfortunately, it was evidently eliminated as part of the Unified Navigation demolition project.

  • @edwardbrain1 I’ve noted your request for the old stats. Just to be sure I’m making the request as specific as possible, can you clarify which graph you were looking for?

    The old stats have a bar graph, but if that’s not what you’re looking for I’ll want to be sure we’re specifying the right one. Thanks!

  • And, @musicdoc1 the products folks were trying to make it easier for folks who like wp-admin to use it without having to switch back and forth between that and Calypso screens for the items that are only available there.

    They probably thought people weren’t using the old stats, since that was supposed to be removed quite a few years ago (duplicate code bases = greatly multiplied maintenance efforts + difficulty in adding anything new feature requests). You might recall we gathered a lot of feedback on that, too, and were able to get the most frequent requests implemented revisions of the new stats since then. That’s our goal with any feedback here.

    @supernovia,

    the products folks were trying to make it easier for folks who like wp-admin to use it without having to switch back and forth between that and Calypso screens for the items that are only available there.

    When I’m in WP-Admin I want each admin bar link to go to WP-Admin pages, and when in Calypso each admin bar link should go to Calypso page, with exception of one link to the other interface in each case. Previously, that was pretty much the setup, with a few exceptions only on the WP-Admin side.

    Now it’s not possible to have both interfaces working this way, and although the behavior on either side depends on whether “Show advanced dashboard pages” is enabled in Account Settings, neither of the following two options is satisfactory IMO:

    1. Disabled — All admin links in Calypso go to Calypso pages, and All admin links in WP-Admin go to Calypso pages.

    2. Enabled — Most admin links in both Calypso and WP-Admin go to WP-Admin pages.

    I think this is a poor design choice.

    They probably thought people weren’t using the old stats, since that was supposed to be removed quite a few years ago…

    My two cents…The wrong stats was jettisoned.

    Thanks for your help, as always. : -)

    Regarding to goal of ease of use, it seems that while time may be saved for some by eliminating the need to use one or more links to switch back and forth between locations on the two interfaces, for others much time might be lost in having to frequently go the Account Settings to change the “advanced dashboard pages” setting when one’s focus changes from one interface to the other.

    Personally, when convenient I keep both interfaces open in tabs on the same browser, and I’ve never found anything inconvenient about having independent and different admin bars in the two interfaces.

    While reconsidering this, it occurred to me that by keeping the Account Settings open in a separate tab, the switch from one “advanced dashboard pages” setting to the other could facilitate rapid transition from one interface format to the other. I begin to see how that might be convenient to some with other work habits than my own.

  • All valuable insight, @musicdoc1, and things that should be considered as the developers continue to iterate on the unified navigation – I’ll make sure that this is reported. I am sure the ultimate goal is to have all needed features available with Unified Nav so that constantly enabling advanced dashboard pages is a personal preference as opposed to a necessity, but as the interface continues to be worked on, thinking about ways to ease the transition between the two is important.

    Thanks,

    staff-doublebassd,

    Thanks!

    Perhaps there could be three or more options at Account Settings. For example:

    1. All menu links in Calypso go to Calypso pages, and most menu links in WP-Admin go to WP-Admin pages. (i.e. same as before unified navigation)

    2. All menu links in Calypso and in WP-Admin go to Calypso pages.

    3. Most menu links in both Calypso and WP-Admin go to WP-Admin pages.
