Can’t access wordpress.com dashboard or edit site
-
I cannot access the WordPress dashboard. My actual website is running fine externally, just unable to add or edit anything. This has been going on for 3 days now. After logging in I get a bare bones outline and my site does not load. I am trying to add an image but it now says ‘you are not allowed to create posts as this user’.
Using Chrome. On a wordpress.com starter package. Only used 3% of the storage.
I have cleared cookies and cache several times, tried in incognito mode, signed in/out etc numerous times. Have tried in a different browser (duckduckgo) which DOES work but is very slow and lagging.
Thanks!

Hello! From what you’re describing, it’s possible the issue here is a caching problem with either your system’s DNS cache or your network cache. There are a couple of steps we can recommend to test things out:
- Try logging into the site dashboard with a different device, such as another desktop or laptop machine, or a mobile device such as a tablet or a mobile phone. If you’re able to access your dashboard while using another device on the same network, your original machine may need to have its DNS cache cleared. Our support guide for clearing the DNS cache on your device is here: https://wordpress.com/support/how-to-clear-the-dns-cache/
- Try logging into the site dashboard while on another network, such as a different Wi-Fi network or the cellular network on a phone or tablet. If you can access the dashboard over a different Wi-Fi network or on cellular data, it’s possible the issue is with your original Wi-Fi network cache. To resolve this, you can start by turning off your Wi-Fi router for 10 seconds, then turning it back on. This will flush the local network cache, and should clear out any temporary issues with your connection. If the issue persists after that, the caching issue may be with your Internet service provider. In these cases, the solution is to wait until the ISP clears their network cache.
I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions, or if we can assist you further.

Thank you very much both of you for your detailed answers. I have worked through all the steps you have given.
I CAN access the full WP back end on mobile (also Google) sorry I only have Google/Android devices to check on.
I have cleared DNS cache and used other networks (no difference either)
Disabling browser extensions/applications didn’t help, I don’t have any plugins (caching or otherwise) and use a standard WP theme (Hemingway), I am fully logged in as admin, site health is not visible in my tools on any device/format and (I don’t think ever has been).
By default I can only presume there is suddenly some form of incompatability with chrome- a WP update perhaps? I AM running an older version of chrome which no longer gets updates on my chromebook; until now it hasn’t caused any problems – looks like I’ll have to get a new device :(

Hi there,
By default I can only presume there is suddenly some form of incompatability with chrome- a WP update perhaps? I AM running an older version of chrome which no longer gets updates on my chromebook; until now it hasn’t caused any problems – looks like I’ll have to get a new device :(
Updated versions of Chrome work well with WordPress.com, and I checked things on my end using Chrome to ensure the dashboard is loading as expected. I suspect the outdated version of Chrome is the culprit here. I totally understand that spending money on a new device isn’t always ideal, but it could help ensure compatibility with many things beyond just WordPress.com.
In the meantime, you could test other browsers like Firefox to see if the dashboard displays as expected.
Please reach out anytime if you have questions!

Just a follow up- since the rollout of 6.6 everything is working as normal once again. Seems it was nothing to do with any of the issues above at all and must have been something from WP’s end in getting the update prepared. Really glad I didn’t rush out and and update my ancient Chromebook after all ;)

Thank you for following up on this one! We have not seen other reports of this, which means it was likely an isolated case, but we’ll keep an eye on this going forward. :)
