Can't access WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

After updating my blog today, I suddenly couldn’t access anything on WordPress.com on any device that’s connected to my home network. I’m able to see my blog when I use the internet via my phone, and I’ve been able to view it when run through a proxy, too.

I’ve already cleared my cache and cookies, tried various browsers, and flushed my DNS, but that didn’t do anything. Could it be an issue with my ISP? Is anyone else having this problem?

    (1) How are are connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com?

I’m asking because the way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers. Also note that the main dashboard isn’t designed to work with touch devices through the tablet and smartphone browsers.

    (2) Exactly which browser and version of it are you using. If you don’t know click here to find out > http://whatsmyuseragent.com/
Note: If you are running IE9 in compatibility mode then be aware that it renders as IE7 and IE7 is not supported.

    (3) Have you tried?
clearing your browser cache and cookies > http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
using the browser with all extensions or add-ons disabled
updating the browser to the latest stable version (not a buggy BETA browser version) http://browsehappy.com/
    using another browser

    (4) Are you logging in using the secure https:// log-in? see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

    1. I can’t access WordPress through my DSL connection. I’m able to go on other websites fine, but WordPress will not load.

    2. I’ve tried accessing the site on the most updated versions of Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Chrome, but to no avail. The only reason I can access the support forums is because I’m using a proxy website.

    3. Like I said, I have already cleared my browser cache and cookies. Using a browser with the extensions or add-ons disabled does nothing either.

    4. Logging in via the secure log-in isn’t even the issue because I can’t even load the log-in screen.

    Any other suggestions?

  • I have enabled HTTPS on your account. Did that make any difference?

If not, please tell us which country you are browsing from and who your ISP is.

I’m checking for a friend. She hasn’t been able to load ANYTHING WordPress.com since this morning. She posted on her blog firstandfabulous.wordpress.com and since then, on her iPhone, iPad, AND PC, she can’t get back to see her blog or any others that end with WordPress.com. Help!

Nope. Still can’t connect via HTTPS.

I’m in the United States, and my ISP is RCN.

    @genevievepetrillo
Is your friend using the secure https:// login or not?
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
    Who is her ISP?
    Where is she situated?
Exactly which browsers and versions of them has she tried using?

  • thekaye, would you please try resetting your modem and router?

If that doesn’t work, please try switching your DNS over from RCN to OpenDNS: https://store.opendns.com/setup/computer/

(Just ignore that ‘store’ subdomain. Their service is free with premium add-ons, like ours, but the setup instructions are under the store for some reason.)

I reset my modem/router, and switched my DNS over to OpenDNS, but for some reason, WordPress.com still will not load in any browser.

  • Are you seeing any errors, a loading bar that never stops, a blank white page, or something else?

  • Unknown's avatar

Just a loading bar that never stops.

  • Do you have any other locations that you could check from, like work, home, school, a café, etc?

I’d like to see if this is limited to the network that you’re using at the moment.

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s definitely limited to the network because I can access WordPress from my phone.

  • Ok, at this point I’d recommend getting in touch with your ISP about this, as that appears to be the hangup.

It started coming back intermittently last night, loading the blog entries minus the photos, but today, it seems to be working normally. Thanks for your help, macmanx.
