Can’t add audio (mp3 or wave) to my blog, over and over

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve tried over and over, following what I assume are the new procedures, to add mp3 audio, then wave audio, to a blog entry. No luck,no dice, no nothing! It just puts the title I’ve given it, with no mp3 audio capability. I used to be able (on the old dashboard) to do it easily.

  • Are you typing in the audio shortcode?

    [audio http://blahblah.com/audiofilename.mp3]

Thank you, mtdewvirus, but I’m trying to upload it in from my iTunes library… something I’ve recorded myself, reading a poem. What would the code be for that… simply [audio/grandfete.mp3]? Please advise…

  • @danielabdalhayymoore
You would need to upload the file to the internet somewhere and then use the URL inside the shortcode.

If you purchase a space upgrade, you would be able to upload the file right to your WordPress.com blog.

Thing is, I DID purchase a space upgrade, with which I’ve been able to swiftly and easily upload my files all along. With the new Dashboard have the space upgrades expired? And, please, if you could, tell me the status of my space upgrading… allowance, of if it has indeed expired… THANKS MUCHO.

I meant, where I might go on the site to find out the status of my space…

  • Click Media on the left menu, the Media Library will load and it will tell you how much space is left.

  • Unknown's avatar

Aha! Will do… thanks again. This may resolve the issue? (if not, the squirrel you hear nibbling at your computer will be ME!)

OK, now I’m getting mad. Listen, I have 152.1 MB used, 7.9 GB (98.1%) upload space remaining. I’m 68, a poet, I’ve been using the blog here for a year or more, uploading like a baby. I don’t know the lingo that well, but it seems I have PLENTY of space to upload. I went to the Library and Added New, and now have version 11 of my MP3 there, BUT I DON’T SEEM ABLE TO INSERT IT INTO A MOST RECENT POSTING OF A POEM, THAT HAS AN IMAGE AND THE POEM, BUT I WANT TO PUT MYSELF READING IT, BETWEEN THE PICTURE AND THE POEM, CAPICH? So, please, please, tell me how to do it. I THINK THE BLAME IS ON THE NEW DASHBOARD, WHICH I CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT FIGURE OUT!!! (OK, forgive my shouting… but it’s getting frustrating here in dark and perhaps about to snow Philadephia!!!

  • You need to place the File URL of the mp3 file into a shortcode in the post. There isn’t a way to insert the shortcode automatically, so you need to type it in. Here is an example:

    [audio http://blahblah.com/audiofilename.mp3]

But, kind and patient sir, it says UPLOAD MEDIA FILES FROM YOUR COMPUTER, which to me means from iTunes where the MP3 is stored…and then it doesn’t work. There isn’t a URL as such for this audio, is there? Not a code I can figure out… (AGAIN, I NEVER HAD TO DO THIS BEFORE…a bit of recorded audio would upload directly from my iTunes… HELP!) Sorry, we’re going round and round here…

I recorded a poem on Audacity (Mac computer), put it into my iTunes and converted it to an MP3, then went to the site to edit the new entry, and where it says to upload an audio directly from my computer, that’s what I have done. But it comes up only with the title, no audio connection. IS IT NOT TRUE THAT I HAVE PLENTY OF SPACE AND THIS SHOULD WORK? Please answer this also.

  • There is no need to repeatedly upload the file to the blog. Once it has been uploaded it is there. :-) You can verify this by going to Media on the left menu.

If you want to get the File URL, click the Add Audio button. Switch over to the Media Library tab on the popup window. Find the file you want to use and click the Show link. You’ll see all of the options. Click the File URL button and the Link URL field will be filled with the URL of the media file. Copy this URL. Then you’ll use that when you type the audio shortcode. For your file it would be:

    [audio http://ecstaticxchange.wordpress.com/files/2008/12/grand-fete.mp3]

OK, I now have an mp3 under the picture and above the text. Thank you so much for enduring so patiently the bucking bronco of my stupidity. But I have to admit, this process is truly complex for basic users like me. AND the whole code for the link to the audio is rather ugly under the picture, no? I assume if one gets Odio (or whatever it’s called) it’s more beautiful, no? But doesn’t it cost money? ALSO, you never affirmed that I have lots of space for uploads… (if my 30 year old son were here he’d tell me… you look that or younger… so you have to substitute for him… he’s in Zurich.)
At least now I know how to get that audio contraption inserted where it belongs… clunk clunk. God bless… (but please answer the space amount question before we take our leave… by the way, where are you?)

  • You had inserted a link and had not pasted the ‘audio’ part of the shortcode. I have fixed it for you. Take a look now.

Aww, now that’s purty. There we are: RESOLVED. Thanks again… and I’ll just assume that I have scads of room for audio uploads, etc. Blessings on you… (it still does seem rather complex… ah well…)

Help! Same problem but I still can’t do this. Bought extra capacity, downloaded mp3 tune into iTune library, used media library, clicked on show, copied code and while I was at it clicked insert code, added [audio before the code, tried deleting the <a etc so code reads “[audio 'http blah blah blah ] and I get the audio button which tells me “error”. Frustrating thing? It actually worked once. When I went back 1/2 hour later, it didn’t. What the heck am I doing wrong?
    Thank you.

Did you happen to edit the post in the meantime? Check it in Edit and make sure the link to the MP3 is not, in fact, a LIVE link. That is, it’s not underlined. If it is, that will always screw you up. Just click on it, and select the Unlink icon from above. Then save.

Also: it’s helpful if you give us a link to the post, starting with http.

How can i insert and play a song in my page(s)

  • Unknown's avatar

I seem to be having the same difficulty as Daniel. It was so easy to insert the link into the post, copy it and then put it in the widget, but now there’s no link at all. I’ve tried writing out the link in my Listen To: Widget, but nothing happens. I have plenty of upload space… I guess the WordPress designers need to go back to the drawing board on this one? I love the other changes though! Thank you for advising me!

@debkrum07: Please make sure you include your blog’s URL when you post a question, or link your nickname to your blog as explained in the Sticky “8 Things to Know”.

The shortcode for the wp audio player does not (and did not) work in a text widget, only in a post or a page.
