can’t add categories

Hi, I am having trouble adding categories too. It just won’t accept them. The only way I have found around this is to edit other categories – but obviously this is not a solution.
Any suggestions.

Might help us help you if you told us what is occuring. Are you getting some sort of error? Are you getting the bar along the top that says that they’ve been added and they’re just not showing up? What categories are you trying to add in?

It gives every indication that they have been added, but when I check it shows nothing in the category section.
Also, when I do a post and want to add categories, it seems to work but doesn’t add the category.
This just started happening about three days ago. I just can’t figure out why. I did change my theme I wonder if there are bugs in it and that could be causing it?

I am also facing the same problem as you. As i want to add a new category, it keeps ignoring my action. I am wondering if the system is in the upgrading process which caused some of the functions cannot work

I just want to mention this. If you add a category in it will not show up in your sidebar until you actually publish a post that you have assigned that category to. For example if I set up blog categories for apples like granny smith, delicious, gravenstein, mcintosh and pippin but only wrote posts that I assigned to the first 4 categories, the 5th category would exist, but it would not show up in my sidebar until I wrote a post and categorized it “pippin”. If that does not address the problem you are experiencing then send in a feedback.

Yes, I know that the category won’t add til you’ve done a post with that category – it’s not the problem. The problem is that I can’t add any new categories to any posts. I can only use the ones that are already there. Frustrating.

I’m having a similar problem. If I try to add categories either from the edit post page or the Dashboard>Manage>Categories page I get an error box “400 Bad Request”
I have sent in feedback, but I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong. I was able to add categories when I first set up the blog using the same method that I’m using now.
Grateful for help/suggestions.

I’m having the same issue. I just started using my blog recently, I’ve got 3 posts, but I can’t add categories to the posts.
New posts, old posts, the categories don’t stick. I type a new category, hit Add, it shows up and is checked, but upon saving the post everything reverts back to “Uncategorized.”

I’ve just been reading some of the other related forums and have discovered that Dr Mike is not a mind reader.
I omitted to mention that I’m on a mac using OS X.4.8 and Omniweb 5.5 (build 607)
Put that Ouija Board away Dr Mike! (this info was included in my feedback report).

Well it’s good to know I’m not alone – but it seems there has been no solution found. I did contact help and there was nothing they could do. I don’t even get a error message or the appearance that they’ve been added. They simply don’t add period. It’s weird because my other blog has no problem like this. I have been playing around with the new themes a bit but I’ve used a new theme on my other blog and that still isn’t problematic.
I’m on a PC, using xp if that matters.
Just now, I had a problem getting a resized photo to insert – ended up resizing it while in the post – but that could be a photo bucket problem.
I guess I’ll keep checking in. Sorry y’all are having the same problem.

I’ve changed my browser to Firefox and got rid of the problem. The browser i was using (Omniweb) doesn’t support the latest version of the TinyMCE Rich Text editor that WordPress is using. There seem to be some other issues with Omniweb and WP but I’ll spare you the details.

I’m having the same problem as well – the last couple of days have been on and off, where I add categories and they show up in the Manage tab but then disappear later. Today I logged on and there are no categories, and they won’t add, except this time I get the “Something strange happened, refresh” message, but refreshing does nothing.
It also happens to me when I try to manage the blogroll; nothing will update and the links, if they are added, disappear later.
WordPress is also crazy slow for me, I don’t know what’s happening? I’m using Firefox 1.5, and I tried IE but it was loading so slowly I just gave up. This is pretty frustrating. Oh yeah, and I’m using the Rounded theme, if that has anything to do with anything?

I’m having the same issue (can’t add categories), on a few different themes and in both Firefox and Safari, so I don’t think it’s a theme-related issue.
Same dealio w/ error messages, with one weird twist: when I type in what I want the category to be and move the cursor to the “add” button, a ghost drop-down list of categories appears. They look like categories other WP.com users have created that start w/ the same letters (they aren’t ones I’ve come up w/ and several are in different languages).
Otherwise, same probs. Would love some insight into this.

Looking at some of your blogs, it seems like this is a relatively new problem that we are all experiencing, something to do with setting up a new blog.
I sent a problem report… and they said they’re working on it… but… haven’t heard anything since.

Furthermore, I started another new blog to test the categories, and they worked. So… the problem is localized a little bit in the sense of time. Or, we all stumbled across some random bug… hopefully someone will solve it.
