Can’t add categories – says ‘something strange happened”

Hi
When I try to add a category, I get an ‘error’ message that says “Something strange happened; try refreshing page”. When I refresh, the form is cleared and when I try again it’s the same old problem. I’ve been able to edit categories (ie. I changed “uncategorised” to “Parenting” but can’t create new ones. I see other people have had category problems, but it seems mine is a different problem. Can anyone help? -

Are you trying to add categories here?
-> Manage -> Categories -> Add newI’m asking because you can’t add categories using the “Write post” page without actually without creating a post and tagging it with the category you are adding at the same time. The write post category adding option is there for only adding categories to posts “on the fly”. It’s not there for adding future categories and won’t work if that’s what you are doing.
If you aren’t doing that and you are using this place to try and add new categories
-> Manage -> Categories -> Add new
then you’ll have to send in a feedback to staff because volunteers on the forum do not have backend access to blogs. -

I am trying to add categories here: Manage/Categories/Add new. So I have sent feedback. Incidently, when writing a post, I don’t see the option for adding a category ‘on the fly’ either, but that’s not a problem if I can get the other problem sorted. Thanks for your help. -
You’re welcome. Although the box on the write post page does not say it’s for adding categories on the fly it can be used in 2 ways: tagging with existing categories and adding new categories on the fly. Best wishes :)

Just bumping this to see if someone can help with adding Categories on the ‘write post’ page. I still don’t have a resolution on adding categories via Manage/Categories/Add new, and I’m getting frustrated having none :( On the write post page on the right hand side is a categories box. It simply has my one lonely category there and not other buttons or indications of how to add more. Anyone? Also, I’ve left feedback regarding my error message (something strange happened)….should I expect a response? If so , how long?

Support staff do not always see every thread that is here. If you have sent in a feedback prior to the weekend with complete information in Mark will get back to you as soon as possible.

Resolved now…..got an email from Mark…..I’ve now changed my browser to Firefox, and it’s all sorted. Thanks!

I’m so glad to hear Mark sorted this for you. We are admonished if we say change your browser but I’m a firefox girl myself. Happy blogging. :)

Somehow I don’t consider this a ‘resolution’ – telling someone to ‘change their browser’ is nonsense. It is like telling a Ford owner that is having a problem with their car to change to a Chrysler !!!!

Actually under certain conditions, it is. If you do a search here in the forums for Safari, you’ll note the threads we have here concerning Safari’s lack of support for the AJAX javascript.
Without knowing what browser the poster was using, I can’t tell if this is a good answer or not. If Mark made the suggestion to switch browsers, this may be the case.
We do not just suggest changing browsers sround here as, you’re right, usually it’s not a solution. But sometimes it is.

I can’t add new Category.
With IE 7 and Firefox 2.0.0.6 I had same problem:
Something strange happened. Try refreshing the page.
I try to Write Post page and to wp-admin/categories.php.
Can i do ?
