Can't Add Users

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to give varying degrees of access to a handful of friends to a wordpress.com site (currently private) that I set up yesterday. It’s my first wordpress site and I assume that these roles would be managed in the Users-All Users panel, but I can’t get them in there.
I want to add new Users and have invited four friends, in the default role, as Viewers.
In order to modify their roles, I think they need to be in the Users – All Users panel ( /wp-admin Dashboard) but I cannot figure out how to add them to this list.
Online guides from WordPress seem inconsistent, inaccurate and incomplete: I don’t have a Users-New option, only Users-Invite. When an invitee accepts, they are visible in the (My Site) People panel but I have no ability to administrate them from here or add them as a User.
    What am I missing?!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you wish to issue invitations to add official users to your WordPress.COM hosted site see these support docs:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#adding-users-to-your-site
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#adding-viewers-to-a-private-site

If the person being invited to contribute to your blog does not already have one, he or she will have to register a WordPress.COM username account. He or she does not need to register a site. Upon receipt of the invitation, the invitee will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If the invitee is logged into their WordPress.com username account, he or she will be taken directly to your site. If not, he or she will be taken to the log-in screen, where he or she can either log in, or can register a new WordPress.COM user account.

The invitees need to be logged into their WordPress.com account prior to clicking the “Accept Invitation” link.

Invitees who do create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.

    Note:
The number 10 is the number of outstanding invitations you can have at any point in time. That limitation is a spammer prevention measure. Wait until the invitees have registered and then send out 10 more.

You have started another thread asking how to change user roles. Once they have been added as users and not as viewers (by invitation, acceptance of invitation and have a registered a wordpress.COM account) see here https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#changing-user-roles

Thank you, Timethief, for your swift and timely response: I’ll check with the new invitees and be sure they’ve set up and are logged into wordpress.com accts. before accepting.

A follow up question: the one invitee I have does not show up under my People>Team, but rather in a separate place under People>Viewers (and I can’t change her role from this location).
Can I get her into People>Team from People>Viewers?
Or is the location a condition of the status having been assigned “Viewer”?
If I were to re-invite my friends as Contributors, would they then automatically be accepted as People>Team, enabling me to manage and update their roles?

    Many thanks

    Hey Timethief
The solution was to re-invite my Viewer in an active role: it seemed not possible to upgrade her role as viewer from within Worpress.
Once I re-invited her in an active role, she appeared under my users-team from whence I may edit her role.
    Cheers
