That’s because you do not understand how the Twenty Eleven theme is designed to operate. Please read this article as it is extremely helpful.

I am ignorant. I can’t figure it out. Maybe I’ll just switch to a simpler theme. I just want to show four widgets on the front page.

The blog you linked to is using 2010, not 2011. You just go to Appearance>Widgets and drag the widgets you want from Available to Sidebar. When you add any widget yourself, the default sidebar items of the theme go away.

I moved to a different theme but still not happy. I’ll keep fussing and eventually figure it out. Thanks for the links even though I tried what they said and could not figure it out.

Every theme here different features and behaviors. Once you settle on a theme please post again if you still need help.
