Can't adjust posts per page

  I limited my blog posts to 8 per page, but all of a sudden all of my 20+ posts appear on the same, very long, page. ‘Help’ tells me to adjust the number of posts from the Reading Settings page of my dashboard. But the Blog Posts per Page setting has disappeared completely from that page, and I can’t find it on any other settings page. Without it I can’t limit the number of posts shown on one page, and my page justs gets longer and longer. Does anybody know how I can fix this, please?
