Can’t alter text in blog posts or text widget

Hi, I posted this yesterday but now can’t fnd the thread so sorry for the repetition!
I can alter text in either my blog post or text widget, i’ve checked the ‘code’ support page and am indeed using the correct code, i’ve tried
<font>and<span>tags but can’t alter anything!Any ideas?

Hi. If you are using a WordPress.COM blog, this may help:

If you’re using WP.COM, log out and then log back in again. Then try a test ‘New Post’ and see if you can then alter text. Do this without any Tags, and then test it with a basic tag like ‘STRONG’
