Can’t bold or link captions in masonry anymore

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve been working on this site for several years without a problem. When directing people to a particular sub-page in the structure, I use a picture with link embedded and a bolded caption with the link embedded in the caption.

For some reason, starting from yesterday I don’t have an option to bold or link in the caption anymore. I can only type in the plain caption. Yesterday I tried a hack by copy-pasting in a linked/bolden caption and that actually worked, but then today that’s not working either.

You can see the example here. I created the “Cutworms and Dart Moths” block yesterday and could still bold/link that caption, but the next two which I created today are neither bolded nor linked.

No help at all? Since I can’t make any headway at all, the only thing I can imagine would be to redo the entire page with gallery instead of masonry. But since I have over a dozen pages with the same structure, I’ll either have to change all of them or have an uneven design.

  • Hi there,

We stopped offering the Masonry block (as well as other “Co-blocks” blocks) a few years ago as noted here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/coblocks/

To explain, the blocks are now owned by GoDaddy and we are not able to address issues with these blocks, which is why we pulled support on our newer sites. This does not prevent existing sites such as yours, but if there is an issue with those blocks we’re not able to look into it sadlyi

You may wish to try the Tiled Gallery Block which gives you a masonry-like layout as one of the options.

For the blocks you have now, it’s not possible to edit text under the Personal plan, but if you upgrade to Premium (or purchase our CSS add-on) it is possible to use CSS code to override the default behaviour of the blocks so that the text is formatted as you wish.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

@staff-totoro, Tiled Gallery doesn’t appear to work because there’s no option to link the pictures to the page they represent. This entire page I’m editing is a pictorial menu, every picture links to the appropriate page. That’s a really important, basic functionality that masonry blocks provided and gallery does not. 1/3 of my site format relies on these pictorial menus. The only reason my entire site hasn’t been destroyed is that I haven’t had to edit the other pages, so at least for now they’re still working as designed.

Also, tiled gallery doesn’t seem to allow for blank tiles, if you don’t enter the exact # of tiles to perfectly fill each row then they size up, which looks ridiculous. So if I did that then I could only link as many pages as are exact multiples of 4.

  • Hello there,

Many thanks for reaching out with that extra detail. We know these changes can be annoying at times.

If a tiled gallery is not of use, or the CSS add-on then you may need to add image blocks inside of column blocks. This may be a good way of future proofing the content as these are standard WordPress blocks.

    I hope this helps.
