Can’t buy my domain?

  • Unknown's avatar

I tried to buy a domain name and mapping today, but there is some kind of error and all I keep getting is a try again button. I’m pretty sure the domain name is available because when I type it into my address bar I get godaddy trying to get me to register it.

    Here’s what I’m getting:

“We were unable to verify that (the domain I typed) is pointing to WordPress.com. If you own this domain, follow the directions below to get it ready for your blog. If you don’t own it, try a different name to see if something else is available. If the domain is available, you may be able to register it with another registrar and then map it to your blog.”

Anyone know what’s going on? Am I supposed to register is someplace else first? Any help is appreciated

It looks as if someone else already owns that domain, maybe GoDaddy itself. You have to purchase the domain before you can map it to WordPress.com; either purchase it from WordPress or from whoever owns it now. Try going through WP first, though, because if it IS available, it’ll be cheaper to buy it through WP.

Ok so I guess my domain is taken, or it’s reserved and no one is really using it yet. My next question is, if I register the .net version which is available, and then .com becomes available later on, can I buy a new domain and transfer my wordpress to it?

I know I’m being ridiculous, but I really wanted the .com, .net just seems less professional, but I guess it’s better than .wordpress.com

Yes, you can buy it if it becomes available later. You may need to buy another domain mapping upgrade, but probably not.

Yes, as raincoaster says you can buy a domain name in the future if and when it’s offered for sale and my guess is that it will be. But will you want to pay the price?

The domain name you want could have been purchased by a domain name squatter, who anticipate which names others will want to buy. They buy them cheap, park them and squat on them while planning to resell them in the future for more money than what they paid for them.
