Can’t change avatar
-
When I changed the theme about 2 months ago, I also changed my avatar to match it in the general settings. I uploaded a new image, cropped it, etc., and it shows up properly on my Settings page. But it’s been a few months, and despite deleting and re-uploading, it never shows up anywhere, any place it should, such as in comments, in the widgets, on someone else’s WordPress comments, etc. The old avatar still does, though, but that matches a previous theme. What the hell am I doing wrong? How can I get the new avatar to show up?

Please tell us what your old avatar and your new one look like. We can see one, but we have no idea which it is.
Also: are you changing the Gravatar (on Gravatar.com), Avatar (on your profile page), or Blavatar (on your Blog Settings)?
-
The one you see above your reply (attached to my original inquiry) is the old one that I cannot get rid of. The new one is similar, but is just a cropped section of the image on the right side of my present banner.
I’m just trying to change my avatar on my profile page (Settings|General|Blog Picture). I haven’t evren attempted to use Gravatar or Blavatar, whatever they are.

Gravatar is WordPress-speak for avatar.
Blavatar is WordPress-speak for favicon.
Favicon is tech-speak for those teeny little pictures in the browser bar and tabs.:)

ahhh….
Registering with Gravatar.com is the answer!
And SIMPLE …. even for this newbie! :-) -
I’d bet anything the OP’s problem is that the new file has the same name as the old file. Try changing the name before uploading.
-
OK. I renamed the image and uploaded the newly renamed image. No change. Still have the old avatar, it just won’t go away.
I have not signed up for Gravatar. I don’t see why I need to sign up for an outside service when the settings page says that the image I upload will be used as my blog picture. That makes no sense to me. What would be the point of having a blog picture setting in the first place, if I have to go outside the settings to get it to work?
And Christ ain’t returning anytime in the future …or ever. :-)

– What you have succesfully changed is the blavatar: the little picture that shows up before your URL in the address bar of your browser. As raincoaster told you, you don’t change your avatar in Settings|General|Blog Picture but in your profile page (My Account|Edit Profile, or Users|Your profile).
– Visiting gravatar.com was offered to you as a surefire solution in case uploading through your profile didn’t work. And that’s because some things, especially cropping, are a bit cranky at the moment. You don’t see why you need to sign up for an outside service, but I don’t see why you prefer not solving your problem.
– Gravatar.com is not exactly outside: it’s a project of the same people that run wordpress. That’s where your avatar will end up, even if you upload it in your profile page.

My Avatar has disappeared from the avatar area in Settings|General|Blog Picture but in your profile page (My Account|Edit Profile, or Users|Your profile).
I have not changed it for some time now and have not signed in for a week to check my site… Is there some problem I should be aware of that I can no longer see it?

Thank you! That wasn’t clearly stated previously. I didn’t even realize I had a second profile page, independent of the General settings page. Now I guess I’ll wait and see if it changes across the board. I’ll also check the gravatar site.
Thanks again.
