Can't change my email on wordpress.com site…

Hi,
I am trying to change my email on the wordpress.com site but I receive an error that the email is already taken. The email address is mine and is showing up in my wordpress.org account.
How do I reconcile? I am not clear what the difference is between the .com and .org sites.
Any assistance is appreciated.

We already have an account under that ProtonMail address, you created it 3 weeks ago.
If you have access to a third email address, your best option is to log in here under that ProtonMail address, change it to your third email address, which will free it up to change the email address under the account you’re currently logged in as now.
If you don’t recall the password you used for the account under the ProtonMail address, we have some options for you at https://wordpress.com/support/account-recovery/
If you don’t have a third email address, you can use a ProtonMail alias: https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/addresses-and-aliases/
