can't change static home page

Hi!
I want to change my static home page to the portfolio page in my theme, but when i go to customize -> reading , there is no option to change it like I saw in some tutorials and on “how to” websites.
Do I have to activate something to change this, or do I need to do something else? Can somebody please help me :)Thankyou !

Have you actually published any posts (not pages) yet? You may need to do that first.

This is a one or the other situation. You have two choices on any blog
(1) All posts on the front page. By default that is the URL of the site.(2) A static front page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ and all posts on a different page.
By default the front page of your blog displays all published posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. That is for the convenience of your returning visitors, who come to read your latest post, and who are not likely to be happy with being compelled to click through the same static page with the same blah, blah, blah on it every time they visit the blog looking for the latest post.
However, if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts. Create your pages first

Thankyou so much for responding!
I want option 2, but when I go to My Site, there is no “customize” anywhere in the list.
I did make portfolio pages, and at first they were automatically at the home page, but all of the sudden, they were gone. I thought that the problem was that the page settings were changed or something, but I can’t adjust it like I said…

Hi @irismateboer, it looks like you’ve already got this.
For what it’s worth, if you don’t have any published pages, the customizer won’t offer an option to set up a static home page. I’m guessing that was the issue here since your page was not published when you started this thread.
