Can't change Sydney theme footer

  I looked a forum that had 127 comments and at the end it was closed out with no solution that was 2 months ago. Is there a solution to fixing this? “Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.” I followed many of the steps and tried YouTube but I still have not been able to change what was once a very easy change. There are so many that is having this issue, and I am not an expert but many stated everything worked fine until the upgrade. If there is not a solution is there a way to go back to the older version, simply? Thank you for your time.   Sydney is a theme used on WordPress.ORG sites. https://wordpress.org/themes/sydney/ It cannot be used on any wordpress.COM hosted site that lacks the Business plan upgrade. https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#uploading-custom-themes
