Can't change username

  I accidentally created another account with the username I wanted (sporadicallyjoe). I then realized it was possible to change usernames, so I didn’t even need to make a new account in the first place! I then changed sporadicallyjoe to a different username. Next, I went back to my main wordpress account (veiwtifuljoe) to change the username to sporadicallyjoe, but it says the username is already taken! WordPress must have a workaround for stupid mistakes like this?
