Can't connect to Blogging 101
-
Re the Blogging 101 course, the e-mail I got on Jan 3 says, – We’ll post each day’s task at 12AM GMT (7:0PM EST) on The Daily Post. To get task notifications via email, make sure you follow The Daily Post. Then, set your following preferences to “daily email.”
Neither following “The Daily Post” link or the “following preference” link gets me to a place where I can set my preferences to “daily email” or anything else. I readily concede my stupidity when it comes to technical matters (that’s why I signed up for the course), but you do not seem to be doing anything to help me past that. Perhaps I overestimate my limited abilities or underestimate your presumably extensive ones. Whatever, I still haven’t seen the first lesson and have no idea where or how to find it. This is not an encouraging beginning, but I’m willing to stay with it, if I can find out where and what “it” is. Thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Is it possible to blog within a blog or to link by tab index to another blog?
The blog under which I am registered was set up for me by a friend. It already has a fair amount of material, all of it documents related to an issue that I want to share and explore with a wide audience. It needs some tweaking and restructuring, but the main problem is that it is static. I have no way to connect or interact with followers.
I want to be able to add an interactive journal-type component (what I normally think of as a blog) to the mix already there and then link to it directly from the existing blog’s home page. Ideally, I would like the new component to become the centrepiece of the new setup. Is that possible? If so, how? If I can insert such a thing? If that can be done, then I assume I will be able proceed through the course within that component, taking advantage of the newbie-focused process you offer.

In what way is https://darcyallansheppard.wordpress.com/ static? Its front page is displaying excerpts of the eight most recent posts.
I have no way to connect or interact with followers.
The option to comment can be added to all previous posts (and pages on soem themes) and to all new posts. See the support page Enable and Disable Comments.

Presuming you leave the number of posts to display on the front page the same, after eight posts all of the displayed content on the front page will be your original material. There are ways to link to older posts, yet keep them separate from your own, including:
* Custom Menus
* Use a theme with a grid-style page template where images link to selected posts, such as Hatch, Fontfolio, Mixfolio. -
To displace the previous posts from the front page immediately, you can use choose to display a static front page, which might include separate links to your new posts and pages, as well as the older posts.
See the Front Page support page to learn how to set up a static front page.

Thanks for the advice @ musicdoc1. I’ll think on and look into your suggestions. Problem is, I’m overwhelmed with other stuff right now and may not be able to keep up with all that and the course. But I won’t give up yet. The static front page idea might do what I want.

Good.
Another option would be to create one post and set the number of posts to display on a page as one. When you publish your second post change the number of posts to display to two, and so on. That would allow you to place only the latest posts on the front page. Note, however, that if you use this method, then pages 2,3,4, etc. will also show the same number of pages as the front page. The setting for the number of posts to display is at Settings > Reading > Blogs pages show at most.

As will archives pages such as author pages, category pages, tag and keyword search results, etc.

Correction / revision:
Above,”same number of pages as the front page” should be “same number of posts as the front page.”
Regarding archive pages, the “number of posts to display” sets the number of results (posts or pages) to display on an archive page. Additional results may be reached with a tab at the bottom of the page labeled “Previous,” “Older Entries” or the like.
