Cant create new free blog site

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I am trying to set up my first Word press blog and had been told there is a free package.

When I try to set up a new blog I never get a free option, just a series of payment options.

Im using Firefox. I have tried deleting my word press account, clearing cache history and signing up with a new email address but I still get the same problem of no free option.

  • Hi, it sounds like you might accidentally be choosing a paid domain, or other paid options.

Try starting at https://wordpress.com/free , and then just make sure you choose a free name. Here’s a visual walk through:

For me, when I arrive at the “launch your site” page in the last step of the walkthrough, the option to create a free site that appears at the top of the page is not there.

  • Have you selected a custom domain? That would require a paid plan.

Do you mean custom as in whatever is automatically generated (e.g., something like book13worm2198725098.home.blog) or any wordpress.com URL (e.g., something like myblogisamazing.wordpress.com)? The visual walkthrough shows the user typing in their own wordpress.com URL.

  • There are several free options available. If it says free next to it, it’ll work without a paid plan.

    @Book13worm
if I understand your issue, you’re at a launch site option rather than signup, correct? If so you should see “skip purchase” — or you can simply launch the site by changing its privacy at https://wordpress.com/settings .

I’ve given up and launched the blog in Blogger. Even when I selected a free option, I was eventually taken to the page that lists the various paid plans, with no option to skip purchase on the page.

Here’s a visual instruction to help you out. Select Business and then still type Blog as your business type. You will have the free option available to you with other paid domains.

I am a veteran user and I cannot find anything anywhere in the set-up that lets me create a free blog. I’m using his ID to write this.
He needs to create a blog for his English class.
    This is insanely frustrating.

  • @pudhabear,

I already see a free site in your account, https://79028.home.blog/, created only a few hours ago. Did you manage to figure this out?

With all do respect, I’m not sure what it is you guys are seeing on your end but there is no option to either create a free .wordpress.com domain name nor the option to choose a Free Plan with starting a new blog. It used to be there not too long ago, but it’s not there any longer. If you’re having trouble understanding this you’re welcome to open your browser in privacy mode and attempt at creating a blog yourself. You will then see at that point that you cannot proceed to your blog without first paying for a premium plan. Although you are in fact offered a free domain name for the first year, in order to get that free domain name you have to select a paid plan. However, a .wordpress.com extension is neither visible and, when you do get to the plans section, a Free Plan is not one of the options available. The cheapest they have is $4.

Going to https://wordpress.com/start in an incognito browser tab, I see the free address suggested here on the domains step:

And selecting that I see the free plan option on the plans step:

I’m seeing a *.photo.blog address as the free address option, because I selected “Blog” and “Photography” as the options for the type of site I’m making. Had I selected another topic for my blog, it would have shown a different .blog option, like *.art.blog or *.home.blog, and if I selected “Business” as the type of site I would have seen a *.wordpress.com address instead.

If you’re not seeing that free subdomain at all, make sure you’re not searching for a full domain on the domains step. If you search for a full domain, you won’t see a free subdomain option in the results, because you’re explicitly searching for a custom domain. To see the free subdomain option, use only a keyword in the domain search box.
