can’t create parent and child category

i read in the forum about parent and child categories. but i still have no idea how to do it.
when i write a post all i see in the side bar is category (among other things), but no option to add sub-category. and how does one also select categoy hierarchy? -
Parent and Page hierarchy have nothing to do with categories.
->Write -> Page
look outside the editor box to the right hand side for the blue buttons
Discussion
Page Status
Page Password
Page Parent – this is the one you want
Page Template
Page Slug
Page Author
Page OrderClick on the plus sign + and open it up
inside you will have choices, assign the hierarchy you want making each Page the “Parent” or “Child” of another. -
thank you so much! however i already knew that one. i was under the impression that it applies to categories as well. would have been gr-r-a-t if it did!

In the Manage Categories bit of your control panel you can add a new category and there is an option to select a parent category for it.
I’m using WordPress on my own site though, not one hosted at wordpress.com. (I’m assuming you read about the category thing in my post?)

Categories and sub-categories can be likewise hierarchially arranged.
-> Manage -> Categories (this is where to structure them hierarchically)
-> Presentation -> Widgets (this is where you configure the Category widget to display the hierarchical structure in your sidebar) -
