Can't create space between paragraphs
-
I mainly use the visual editor because I don’t really know anything about the simplest of codes. When writing I hit the return key to create a space between one paragraph and another. It shows up fine in the editor, but when I hit post and check the actual post, most if it is all run together without spaces between paragraphs. Sometimes there will be a space between 1 paragraph out of five and I therefore thought I might be able to figure out why that one works and the others don’t when I look at it on the html editor, but nothing I try works.
Advice about fixing this problem WITHOUT having to deal with the html editor would be gold. Advice about working around the problem using the html editor properly would be a welcome silver ; )

Gold: make sure “Paragraph” is selected in the Formatting tool of the visual editor (row 2, tool 1).

Spot on.
Somehow, since that is where I frequently change the size of my font, it never registered that that tool was also? (perhaps I’m misunderstanding the tool entirely) for controlling the format – even though that’s what the tool says directly on it…. It strikes me as odd that there wouldn’t be a separate tool for just font-size (I’m aware as I’m typing this that there probably is and I just haven’t found it…)
Anyhow, many praises!

There is no toll in the editor for controlling font size or style or color. These are 3 ways to change fonts on wordpress.com blogs.
(1) Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the HTML editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/
(2) Changing font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2
(3) Changing all font families, colors and sizes throughout the whole blog by purchasing an annually renewable Custom Design upgrade and using Typekit Fonts with Staff support. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
Note: Any font changes to font families, colors and size in the blog title, tagline, post titles, page titles cannot be done without CSS editing. -
“since that is where I frequently change the size of my font”
???
I suppose you mean by using h1, h2 etc. These are only meant for creating headings that match the style of the theme you’re using. They vary greatly from theme to theme, so don’t use them just for changing the font size: if at some point you decide to change theme, you may be very unpleasantly surprised. Example here:
http://wpbtips.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/headingspecimens.pngTo change the font size of portions of your text, you need coding in the HTML editor – see here:

@panos — good points! The varying ways that the different themes interpret the heading tags, etc., is one of the reasons I’ve stopped using blockquote. I don’t like the way that many themes render it, and when I change from theme to theme, I don’t want one of those unpleasant surprises. Best to keep the header codes for actual headers.

H1 should be used for site titles
H2 should be used for page and post titles
H3 should be used for widget titles
H4, H5 and H6 for subheadings in post and page content. -
