Can't customize theme
-
Hello. Is there something wrong with the main WordPress site today? For my original account I logged in today and attempted to change the theme. That produced only a white background. My content is still there, but the background is totally nada.
Then I logged out and tried creating a new account starting with the theme I’m after. I got the original theme, as expected – but in customization when I tried uploading and applying my own banner pic, the customizer told me that pic was activated – but the actual display hadn’t changed. The original theme pic is still there.
Both of the above issues occur in all my browsers, though I mainly use Chrome.
Thank you.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
On your site, https://avalonbay777.wordpress.com/, I see a picture with mountains set as the site header. That’s the same image set in the Customizer.
Did you click the Publish button at the top of the Customizer after adding your own image?
And what is the address of the other site where you’re having this problem?

Is it even possible to create a site with a chosen theme initially activated? I’ve been meaning to start a topic on this issue, because I’ve discovered no way to choose a theme during the present site creation process. Instead, each time I’ve created a site in recent memory I’ve always obtained an unwanted theme.

@musicdoc1 I’m sure you’re aware there are several different signup paths. Some of them don’t show very many themes because we’ve found so many people seem to get anxious about picking one and abandon setup.
One option is to sign up from the theme demo, for example:

One option is to sign up from the theme demo, for example:
https://canarddemo.wordpress.com/I’m usually logged into an account when I’ve visiting WordPress.com themes. Given that, won’t clicking the “Use this theme” button on a demo activate the theme on my primary site. It hadn’t occurred to me until just now that I could log out of the account first or to use another browser, but in either case that would result in the creation of a new account. I typically want new sites to be in the same old account.
If you weren’t referring to the “Use this theme” button then how would one add the theme to a new site from the demo?
-
@musicdoc1 it should work even if you’re logged in. Do you see “Use This Theme” there?
https://canarddemo.wordpress.com/
Also, if you’d like we can take this to another thread so @avalonbay777 isn’t bothered with the pings.

@kokkieh: Yep, definitely clicked “Publish.” Even now when I look at the customizer, in the left-hand sidebar it shows my selected pic in the Background pane, but not in the main pane on the right.
My original site – where attempting to change the theme just produced a white, blank background – is andydoerksen.wordpress.com.
Thanks for the response!

Oh, so you’re trying to change the background image. I missed that in your first post.
While this theme allows you to set a background image, and it’s correctly set – when switching between pages, while the browser is still loading I see the image sticking out below the footer bar. But normally this theme doesn’t display the background.
On most WordPress themes that background color/image option refers to the background behind the theme. i.e. the theme might have a fixed width, so as soon as your browser window is wider that that width, the remaining space will be filled by the background. It does not usually refer to the background of the area where text is published.
But with the Publication theme you have on these sites, the theme is designed to always fill the entire browser window, so the background never actually becomes visible.
It’s strange that it still gives the setting in that case, though, so I’ve opened a bug report in case this is actually something broken. But it could be that things are working as they’re supposed to here.

I’m using twenty fourteen theme; primary sidebar, which is supposed to be on the left, is showing at the bottom, like a footer sidebar. Why? Can’t get it to look at all like the picture. And .mp3 and .wav files won’t upload; what format do I need for audio?

Please start a new topic here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1 (which is what I should have done). If you do so, then please provide a link to your site there.
