Please scroll midway into the following link and look at the left side of the screen; https://emmasouthlondon.wordpress.com/about/
I believe you did manage to configure it.
Keep in mind that some Themes do not allow a Widgets on the homepage, Which might explain why it does not show up there.

I’m sorry, I just noticed my mistake.
Can you please describe what you’re doing exactly and which step in the guide you think might not be working too well?
When you go to My Site> Themes> Customize> Widgets – Can you see the Category Cloud option?Awaiting your reply.
